Leland and Leon share in common the uniquely American muse that falls in that indigenous place where Blues, Soul, and Jazz come together as one source. They share the awareness of the Texas Blues Guitar hierarchy inherent in their background. Their soulful, bluesy jazz exhibit influences that lean towards,T-Bone Walker, George Benson, Stax Records, Kenny Burrell, B.B. King, Phil Upchurch, Freddie King, Wayne Bennett, Grant Green, Albert King, Motown, Wes Montgomery, Michael Bloomfield,Charlie Christian, Johnny Winter and The Vaughan Brothers.
Years of roadwork and club work yield a smooth and sophisticated sensibility to their playing.
Perennial Houston based musical director and guitarist extraordinaire, Leland Isley cut his teeth as a side man in Atlanta for several blues artists signed to the Iciban Blues label. Including International touring artist Theodis Ealey, Houston's first lady of Soul; Trudy Lynn, (Just a Little Bit) and Atlanta, Georgia crooner Sandra Hall.
Leland worked with R.L. Burnside, the late Johnny Clyde Copeland, the Blues Brothers and Frankie Lee. "I work with touring Zydeco artist Lil' Brian and the Zydeco Travelers. This less than traditional troupe allows me to use my funk/soul roots and even play a little blues now and then" says the creative musician of his recent stint. More than 15 years of professional roadwork has honed Leland's craft and instincts to a fine point.
Leon Rodriguez began playing guitar at 3 years old when an uncle gave him a little Mexican guitar and became his first teacher. Leon later studied Jazz guitar with Chester Rupe as a teen, with Jack Peterson's protege' Joel Sanders as an adult and Classical guitar with Andres Segovia's protege', Javier Calderon at Del Mar College as an adult. For Leon it has been a true lifelong love affair with guitar.
In more than half a century with the instrument Leon has had the good fortune and privledge of performing with Pony Poindexter (Count Basie), Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker, The Heat Wave, The Foundations, Clarence Carter, Sierra, Rusty Dougherty, "Blue Lou" Marini(Blues Brothers), Arnett Cobb, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Joseph Moments (The JB's), The Communicators, Freida Payne, Jack Peterson, Cookie Lareoux, Millie Jackson, Rosa King, Rhoda Scott, Hope Morgan, Judith Miller, Matta 8, Henry Rivas, Les Paul, The Westside Horns, The Army Jazz Ensemble, The Texas State University Jazz Band, The Corpus Christi State University Jazz Band, The Del Mar College Jazz Ensemble, The Austin Community College Jazz Band with whom he played the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Leon is well regarded as a sideman and studio player at home. Formally trained, Leon has also written, arranged, performed, and produced many radio commercials and film scores.
As a Sound Engineer, Artist Service Professional and Producer, his client list over a 23 year period include Frank Zappa,Harry Belafonte, Electric Light Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Billy Cobham, Mahavishnu John McLaughlin's Shakti, Kitaro, Maynard Ferguson, Jimmie Vaughan, The Austin Opera House, Donavan, The Armadillo World Headquarters, Jerry Goodman, Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius, Ronnie Millsap, Asleep at the Wheel, Delbert McClinton, Bill Carter, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, George Duke, Nancy Wilson, Tom Waits, Kitaro, Joe Ely, B.B. Between them Leland and Leon encompass an enormous scope of American musicality. Their guitar interpretations are inherently Texas flavored.
