As a Solo artist or with other players (Bass, Guitar, Drums, Horn), I deliver what I call "The Great American Songbook Revised" with great respect for classic and more recent material, using my style to serve each song and the event itself. If it's appropriate, I am comfortable relating anecdotes about some great singers and songwriters (Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, Frank Sinatra, Carmen McRae, Harold Arlen); mostly I just enjoy playing and singing these great songs, and I love seeing others enjoying the music, whether dancing or just listening.
One important thing I have learned: at most events, the people need to be able to converse, whether they're seated at dinner or standing at cocktail tables. While performing and creating a level of excitement, it's my ongoing responsibility to maintain an appropriate volume level so guests can enjoy themselves without having to shout. I am grateful for the Gift of Music and for the privilege of performing.
Here's a brief Career Bio, followed by some comments and reviews:
LLOYD BASKIN began playing professionally while earning a degree in Industrial Design at Syracuse University. With his band, the All Night Workers, Lloyd played college events and performed in concert with artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and the Righteous Brothers. After graduating, Lloyd moved to Boston to work as a session musician, also writing and recording original material with Gerry Goffin, Martin Mull and others. After four months on stage in the Boston production of HAIR, Lloyd was invited to join SeaTrain, which became the first American band to record with Beatles producer Sir George Martin in his new Air London Studios. SeaTrain recorded two albums with Sir George for Capital Records and self-produced one more for Warner Brothers. Their tours in the UK, USA and Europe included concerts with Traffic, Aerosmith, Janice Joplin, the Mahavishnu Orchestra and many others. Lloyd has since scored and acted in films; in the Warren Beatty film “Bugsy” he was cast as the famous singer and songwriter Johnny Mercer. His most recent engagements have been for Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line and Holland America Line, as well as the finest Hotels and Country Clubs in Southern California. Lloyd Baskin is widely regarded as a 'Living Library of Modern Popular Songs'.
LLOYD BASKIN - PERFORMANCE REVIEWS
"Lloyd is the best piano bar performer I have ever had the pleasure to hear. His soulful vocals and tasteful accompaniment on piano are so compelling, they can even entice a pro. He is friendly and professional at all times, and he sets a perfect example for all musicians onboard…Lloyd's tune list is not only extensive, it is impressive and intimidating all at once. Throughout my many visits to the piano bar, I was only able to stump him twice. Honestly, I have never heard one performer play so many pinnacle versions of songs. Absolutely amazing!"
BRIAN TERVO, Music Director, Celebrity Mercury
"Lloyd is one of the best MC (Michael's Club) Pianists I've ever heard on our ships. His voice is perfect for the gig and it is complimented by his outrageous piano skills. He sounds as if he has a band playing with him in his head while he plays. Lloyd goes out of his way to make sure the guests feel at home and are always number one while he's in the Michael's Club. [He] always has ideas to improve the Michael's Club and is very good at communicating those ideas. He is a team player and a great addition to our program."
PHIL MATHIS, Music Director, Celebrity Solstice
"Lloyd is an excellent entertainer, taking ownership of the lounge in which he entertains, and doing so to the highest standard. He makes the guests feel 'at home' and relaxed with his charming warm personality. It is without doubt, Lloyd has worked perhaps the toughest room on the ship and has done so successfully... He has been a pleasure to have as a major part of the entertainment team."
IAN BROCK, Music Director, Celebrity Equinox & Eclipse
"This is Lloyd's first contract with Holland America and he has completed it successfully. The European Itinerary is a very hard one to please guests on ... With a positive attitude, Lloyd took steps to give the guests the best experience possible. He is an accomplished musician with a great repertoire of Jazz Standards and the Great American Songbook, often receiving praise for this selection of music and the relationships he built with regulars in his bar."
