Known for writing and playing catchy 1960s-influenced power pop that inspired countless alternative rockers including Kurt Cobain, The Smithereens gained popularity with late 80's radio favorites including "A Girl Like You," "Blood and Roses," "Behind The Wall Of Sleep," "Only A Memory," "Yesterday's Girl" and “Blue Period.” The Baltimore Sun reviewed a recent Smithereens show: “How are you on guitars – do you like them? Big, ringing chords? Jangly, melodic riffs, built on droning open strings? Chugging rhythms, supported by a good, loud bass, with clock-steady drums holding things together?” As for today, "the band is playing as well as we've ever played, with more focus and more intensity," says lead singer Pat DiNizio. "We still feel like we have something to prove. We have to hit a grand slam every night, and we have to be twice as good as bands half our age. And we've got this body of work that spans over 30 years; so, if they'll let us we'll play two, two-and-a-half hours every night and bang through songs like a freight train." Featuring the original singer, lead guitarist and drummer, The Smithereens maintain a busy performing schedule, preserving their reputation as one of rock's hardest-working live bands, and continuing to thrill the devoted fan base that's stuck with them over the years.
