I am a solo gig pianist. What I do is very clear-cut. I play jazz standards ("Misty" would be a classic example),blues, light classical, and some pop in improvisational and straightforward styles. This is most appropriate for background "cocktail" piano at any occasion including weddings, birthday parties, corporate functions, and anywhere else that this fits. If appropriate, I throw out some commentary on the music or some humor, or if not appropriate, then of course, I play in the background. I come equipped with charts to play from and take requests whenever possible. (I bring a huge selection).

I hired Mr. Herzog to perform at a private party. He was to play for 2 1/2 hours. Apparently he suffered an injury to his back the day before the party and after playing for an hour and a half (with numerous breaks) informed me, as he was leaving, that he was unable to comply with the terms of the contract. Several guests commented on his inability to perform requests and his not completing the songs he was playing. He was clearly too ill to perform and should have informed me prior to the party so I could have made other arrangements. From the little I recall of his performance he was a competent pianist.

Barbara Harris' comments are inaccurate. If you got feedback from all the previous gigs I played through gigmasters, you would get nothing but praise. It is true that I suffered a back injury the day before the party, but did not want to cancel at the last minute. It is not true that I did not take requests. I had only one request, for "More" and did not know the song. I completed every song I played. It is true that I was only able to play for one and three quarters of an hour. She also knew from my lips that I generally did not take requests if I did not have the song chart with me. I played on a shaky, ridiculous bench on a piano raised too high above the ground
