The Local Boys are a band that has been waiting for the appellation "Americana", as "Bluegrass" just doesn't cover the material they do. While all members of The Local Boys have deep roots in traditional music, they also have a love for the musical styles that influenced and evolved from old time, country, and bluegrass.

The Local Boys are fairly standard in their acoustic instrumental arrangement. Guitar, Bass, Banjo, Dobro and Mandolin. They can accommodate as a duo act, all the way to a large production band! They have four superb vocalists, who sing lead, as well as harmonies. This gives them an unparalleled ability to find the perfect combination of voices to render any song. They also have an accomplished cellist, for solo or accompanied performances, perfect for the seating of guests, wedding ceremonies, and more!

The Local Boys have performed at Merlefest the last 17 years running. In addition, they've hosted the Plaza Stage with the late, Grammy award winning, Tut Taylor. They actively participate in the outreach program, sponsored by Merlefest, bringing music to surrounding area schools. Look for them at the festival this year!

The members of The Local Boys are:

Aaron Soots - Guitar. If Aaron is not playing guitar, he is practicing guitar. A gifted and talented musician, and an integral part of The Local Boys. Experience-17 yrs

Tommy Rape - Banjo. Born and raised in the small town of Stanley, North Carolina. Again, traditionally rooted and technically accomplished. His fit with this ensemble is unrivaled. Experience-29 yrs

Eric Childers - Dobro. Eric has a rare talent. While he can play any form of music, his approach is strongly traditional. From Monroe to Monk, his style and versatility blend beautifully with his bandmates. Experience-31 yrs

John G. Akin - Mandolin. Born in Texas, but spent most of his early musical career based out of Washington, D.C.. He can sing a ballad so sweet it will bring tears from a stone. Experience-40 yrs

Rick Gaughan - Bass. Classically trained on the french horn, but found his true musical love on bass. With roots covering many styles and genres, he's the only member of The Local Boys to play the Grand Ole Opry stage. His accomplishments in music are remarkable. Experience - 50+ yrs

If you like Americana music, stay and listen to The Local Boys! You may hear Bluegrass or Blues, Classic Country or Rock & Roll. It's a wide variety of good music, played in a down home style. It will touch your heart and raise your spirit!

These guys are solid. We had a great experience from first contact to the end of our reception. The band members are exceptionally cordial and accommodating. I would highly recommend this band for entertainment. The ceremony music was all perfectly timed thanks to Aaron's execution of my playlist. He jumped right in, having seen it for the first time, and it went off without a hitch. One of the many things that made these guys stand out for us(aside from TALENT and professionalism) is how they became part of the celebration. They smiled, cheered, and joined in on our celebration, which made us feel like we truly did have all friends and family present.

I loved this band so much! Their style fit so perfectly with our wedding. They were on time and communicated with me constantly from time of booking until the day of. All the band members were so nice and friendly. Their song list is long and full of awesome hits from all different decades. Everyone pulled me aside and told me how great they were. I'd definitely book them again!

The Local Boys were a perfect compliment to our wedding ceremony and reception. They played us down the aisle and out of the ceremony at the end, and then they kept the party going at the reception. They learned special songs for our first dance, per my request, and they were as gracious as we could've asked for as guests and hired vendors. We would recommend them to anyone looking for a truly authentic bluegrass musician for a wedding or party - great experience!
