Meloni Mathius, has continually thrilled audiences throughout the United States, Canada and Germany. Performing operas, musical, recitals and concerts, she is a vocalist of exceptional quality. Ms. Mathius' voice possesses a sweetness that brings warmth to every performance. She has a unique vocal combination of richness and agility that allows her to perform a variety of roles.
Born in South Carolina, Ms. Mathius sang in her church choir and was a flutist in her high school orchestra. She received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Drama from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and continued her education in New York where she prepared for her Masters Degree in Dance and Dance Education at Columbia University Teachers College. As a dancer, Ms. Mathius studied with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and Dance Theatre of Harlem. She performed professionally as a soloist with the Hudson Theatre Repertory Ballet Theatre under the direction of Joel Harrison. It wasn't until Ms. Mathius ended her successful dance career that she decided to sing professionally.
She modestly began her singing career with a solo performance at Lincoln Center Alice Tully Hall with the Little Orchestra Society / Metropolitan Singers - Greek Chorale Society, conducted by Maestro Dino Anagnost. Ms. Mathius continued with performances of Porgy and Bess at the Oper des Westens in Berlin, Germany, and Die Meistersinger von Nuernburg at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She has performed in Vancouver, British Columbia, in the role of Monica in The Medium by Giancarlo Menotti and in the role of Massinissa in the Canadian concert premiere of Sofonisba by Ferdinando Paer. She recently performed the role of Queen of the Night with the Teatro Lirico D'Europa production of The Magic Flute and was Artist-in-Residence at the Natchez Opera Festival.
