Gregg Gelb is a saxophonist and clarinetist, with over 25 years of professional musical service and leader of a variety of fine groups spanning Early New Orleans Style, to Swing, to Modern Jazz and Latin Jazz. His bands have a long history of establishing fine relationships with corporate and private clients, theatres, and clubs. He brings professionalism and music of the highest quality to all of his musical engagements.
"Gregg Gelb, the ever busy NC saxophonist, clarinetist and band leader and educator, scores again with two recent albums, "Road Trip," which features his quartet, is a straight ahead affair with plenty of swinging ensemble and solo work. "La Fiesta," which features his latin jazz quintet, a group of different personnel from the quartet, is a rhythmically charged workout fit for dancing."
Owen Cordle , Oct., 2016 News and Observer
--------------------------------------------------
Brief Summary of Gregg's Bands:
Jazz Quartet or Quintet, Duo, Trio: Gregg performs mainstream jazz standards with combos that include piano, bass, drums, and vocals
La Fiesta Latin Jazz Quintet: The repertoire of this high energy group consists of authentic Latin Jazz tunes made famous by Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Dizzy Gillespie and others plus Gelb's original tunes.
Second Line Stompers: The repertoire of this fun six piece group is pure Early Jazz New Orleans/NY Traditional Swing.
Swing Band (Octet): "This is the best small group I've heard. These arrangements are exciting listening. While the soloists are all good, and Kathy is special on the vocals, the ensemble passages are true team work."
Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra (17 musicians): For over 25 years this big band has played dances and concerts, many featuring top jazz soloists in the world such as Grammy winner Cecile McLorin Salvant.

Gregg Gelb is a recipient of a Jazz Composers Award from the North Carolina Arts Council and four Regional Artist grants from the Fayetteville/Cumberland County Arts Council. In addition to leading his Jazz Quartet, Swing Band, La Fiesta Latin Jazz Band and the Second Line Stompers, he is the founder and director of the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Society which is based in Sanford, co-founder and player with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra and director of the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble which was the 2nd Place Winner of Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2016 Essentially Ellington Competition.
"Gig for gig, Gregg Gelb may have been the busiest jazz musician in central North Carolina for the last 20 years. Gelb is, by example, an advocate for the music." Owen Cordle, Raleigh News and Observer
"Saxophonist Gregg Gelb is one of central North Carolina's best known jazz musicians." Roger Mullen, Fayetteville Observer
"The North Carolina Symphony demonstrated its versatility by presenting a New Years' Eve program considerably different than the various evenings I have attended over recent years, "It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing," by Ellington, got the evening off to a rousing start, with standout solos from Gregg Gelb. Gelb turned up the energy immediately, with the first of a series of burning solos enlivening the evening."
By Tom Moore, The Classical Voice of North Carolina Jan. 1, 2013 - Raleigh, NC:
"Hi Gregg, You really knocked it out of the park at Sunday's DSO concert. "Just Friends" [from "Bird with Strings"] was just perfect and I have never heard any player, whether live or on recording, imbue the "Porgy " solos with such style and dynamism.
Bill Curry (William Henry Curry, Associate Conductor of the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra)
