As my body tumbled across the pavement at 100 miles per hour like a rag doll, all I could see was a coiling blur of ground, sky, ground, sky, ground, sky. As crazy as it sounds, the only thought going through my mind in those few grueling moments was - I sure hope I can still make my motorcycle race on Sunday. I imagine you can relate to the desire to be the best at something. To really excel. To be number one. That was my goal that racing season. I was laser-focused on winning the championship in my motorcycle racing class. At the time of my crash, I was leading the points in my class, and only half a season remained. I was on track to win it all, yet there I was tumbling across the pavement at 100 miles per hour, just two days before the next race. That experience forever changed my perspective on life and leadership. This is an excerpt from my book Unshakeable Influence: Mastering the Inner Game of Leadership. In my book and in my keynotes, I share adrenaline-filled stories from my days of winning motorcycle races and being in contention to win a motorcycle racing championship. I hold executive MBA degrees from both Columbia University and UC Berkeley, an executive coaching certificate from UC Berkeley, and an undergraduate degree in computer Science from UC Santa Cruz.
