GRAND ISLE FIRE BRIGADE Loves To Play OKTOBERFEST!
In red vests and festive bavarian hats, GIFB celebrates the harvest with great music for beer and bratwurst! Being a small group, and requiring no amplification, GIFB can wander in a big venue from one room to another and be as close to your audience as you dare. We will keep your guests on the dance floor with traditional polka, schottische, waltz, laendlers, and novelty tunes like the "Chicken Dance", Bier Hier, Bier Hier, Erika, In Heaven there is no Beer, Beer Barrel Polka, and more and more!
Grand Isle Fire Brigade (GIFB) is a 5 piece band modeled after "The Hungry Five" a group that was directed by famous arranger Harry Alford, in the 1930s. The Hungry Five was unusual instrumentation in having 2 clarinets, trumpet, trombone and tuba. The music is rooted in german oompah style, but they also did variety shows featuring tunes from Ireland, Spain, Italy, ragtime, Broadway favorites of the 1930's and Christmas carols. We like to bring the fun of traditional oompah to the masses and since forming in 2010, have played for Oktoberfests in Redding, Elk Grove, Woodland, Grass Valley, San Andreas, Corte Madera, Mountain View, Clear Lake and Sacramento.
We are told our music would have been typical during the holidays in Germany 30 years ago, but modern Oktoberfest tends to be dominated by western rock and country music. While we're not modern, we are known to do the occasional contemporary rock tune (Crazy Train, Billie Jean, Back in the USSR) or favorite Oktoberfest english sing along (Country Roads, Sweet Caroline, Hey Baby) in the best oompah style!
What Other Genres of Music?
GIFB started as an oompah band, but like our inspiration we pride ourselves on diversity. We can provide Irish music for St. Patrick's Day in a martial style, Holiday Carols in the Christmas Season and historic Americana and patriotic march music. On request we can augment the band with a drummer and step out to the finest “Second Line” parading New Orleans favorites “When you're smiling,” “Mardi Gras Song”, “and of course “When the Saints go Marching in.”
Do You Require Amplification and a Stage?
One or GIFB's discriminators is we do not typically require amplification. For this reason we can move from place to place easily without a lot of equipment, logistics and setup. We are mobile! That said, if your venue has a stage and PA we can certainly play through it if you like.
