A MOMENT WITH THE MAN NAMED 'CATTSCRATCH'
We had some time to ask CattScratch, a Seattle native DJ his perspective on some important issues today in the local and international DJ arena. Cattscratch is one of the DJs on the pretty cool line-up for The Rendezvous @ Dozen Street on June 11th. We hope through this process, you are able to take some inspiration, if not get some insight into how a DJ functions on a day-to-day basis.
"LEAVE YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR...THERE ARE A MILLION DJS OUT HERE AND 1000S THAT ARE BETTER"
DPW: When did you realize you no longer wanted to just listen to dance music?
"I grew up in the 80s & 90s... "Yo MTV Raps" had me ruining my moms record collection real fast. I always loved dance music. When I was 18 I took a job with a DJ company (Lou Jam Productions). After my 1st night in a club, I was hooked".
DPW: What is your favorite scene to play music out? Are there any crowds that are more open than others?
"So far my favorite place has been in the Philippines. The energy there is just different. Sometimes the venue/show dictates the crowd. I have played to plenty of empty dance floors".
DPW: What stays true across the board in every music scene, no matter the climate, language, or city size?
"People feel music. Eminem said it best, "Music can alter moods." No matter where you are, what crowd you're in front of, there is at least 1 person out there waiting for you to drop "THEIR JAM." It's our job to figure out what that is".
DPW: What are your biggest reasons for getting as involved in the Austin music scene?
"Austin is a music Mecca. You can walk down the street and hear every genre, live, DJs, street performers, etc. Anyone that loves music the way I do, would be crazy to not want to be part of that scene. Good DJ sets, venues, promoters, and fans all working together can develop whatever scene they want it to be. Sometimes it doesn't need to be popular. It needs to be loved. O
DPW: What were the most important things to keep in mind when trying to break into any scene you got involved with?
"Leave your ego at the door. Be humble. There are a million DJs out here and 1000s that are better".
