About Vendor

Country legend Kenny Vernon is a singer-songwriter and guitar player often associated with the Bakersfield country music scene and the birth of early country-rock. Kenny met Merle Haggard during the early 1960s and the two developed a close friendship. Kenny performed as a member of Haggard's band, The Strangers until Haggard was forced to retire from performing in early 2016 due to illness. As a child, Kenny was inspired by his older brother Roy, who hosted a country music radio show in Jackson, Tennessee. It was not uncommon for touring artists to drop in at the Vernon's home, often playing impromptu sessions in the house or yard. During the late 1950s, Kenny began performing and writing songs as a regional act. Kenny later relocated to California during the early 1960s, where he honed his craft as a professional performer and bandleader. Kenny's primary band on the West Coast was called The Boondockers. Kenny participated in the early country-rock music scene, recording with members of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Kenny and his band received an endorsement from Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, with the Fender Telecaster, Fender Stratocaster and Fender Coronado models as his primary choice for electric guitars. Fender also provided Vernon with their own banjo model, which he frequently included in live sets. During the mid-1960s, Kenny and his band played a resident gig at the Golden Nugget Las Vegas, which turned into a permanent residency which lasted nearly fifteen years. In between these performances in Las Vegas, Kenny remained busy recording in the studio and performing in other cities. After his long-running residency gig ended, Kenny chose to focus on private business ventures and performing tour dates with The Strangers. On October 9, 2003, Kenny performed with Merle Haggard and The Strangers on the Late Show with David Letterman. In 2015, the The Oak Ridge Boys recorded the song "Sweet Jesus," which Kenny co-wrote with Merle Haggard. The song won recording appears on their studio album, ''Rock of Ages, Hymns and Gospel Favorites.'' The song won the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Country Song of the Year for the Oak Ridge Boys' recent country single, “Sweet Jesus.” Today, Kenny continues to write and record new music, in addition to touring with The Kenny Vernon & Friends Classic Country Tour, performing concerts throughout the United States and Canada and in parts of Europe, where classic country music remains a popular attraction. Kenny continues to perform at corporate events, weddings, private parties and may be available for your next event.
