Mary Kate Boylan began playing the harp at age seven, and has performed and competed in Ireland, Philadelphia, and NYC Tri-State region extensively in the 16 years since. She medaled six times in the solo harp competition at the Mid-Atlantic Fleadh Cheoil, the Mid-Atlantic region's Irish music competition. Boylan also placed second in the trio competition with her brother Conor. She received first place in the Fleadh Cheoil at age 15, qualifying her to travel and compete in the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil, the worldwide Irish music competition.
In Ireland, Boylan studied harp at Scoil Eisge under Michael Rooney, and performed at Leo's Cafe, on a stage where Enya and U2 have performed.
In the Tri-State area, Boylan has attended numerous workshops under Grainne Hambly, and performed at ceremonies, weddings, AOH functions, masses, Irish bars and restaurants, coffee shops, and private events, and at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia.
Boylan regularly performed with the Next Generation of Traditional Irish Music, and as a member of the Delaware Valley Celtic Harp Orchestra. She performed at the Philadelphia Ceili Festival for several years, including a solo concert on the main stage, and assisted teaching a children's music workshop. She also performed on a local Bala Cnwyd radio station.
Boylan is a multi-instramentalist who also plays the piano and percussion instruments, and a former student of Kathy DeAngelo of McDermott's Handy.
Her love of harp music began as a baby in Philadelphia, when her father routinely brough her to sit in the harp circles of Philadelphia Irish festivals. She grew up surrounded by Irish music, language, and culture, in a large Irish family including her younger brothers Conor, Patrick, Sean, and Liam who competed in and performed the tin whistle and fiddle, respectively. She and her brothers studied, performed, and competed in Irish dance with the Coyle School of Irish Dance from ages three to 13 throughout their childhood. Her passion for her instrument continued through her undergraduate studies at Manhattan College. She graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Communications, with a concentration in journalism, and a Psychology minor in 2012.
Boylan currently resides in Riverdale, NY and works at CBS. She loves the opportunity to also perform weddings, solo concerts, and events.
