I began piping in May 1964, under Pipe Major James Gallagher of the Glenaine Pipe Band. Since that time, I have played in seven pipe bands in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Those bands also included the New York Gaelic Pipe Band and the Hudson District Pipe Band. I have competed in both pipe band and solo piping competitions throughout the Eastern United States. I have received piping instruction from many champion pipers, including Pipe Majors Angus MacDonald and Linden Ingram of the Scots Guards, and Pipe Major John Sprague of the City of Alexandria Pipes & Drums.

Between 1987 - 2003, I played on Long Island with the Nassau County Police Pipe Band. On a number of occasions, this band won first place in the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City. Between 2009 - 2016, I played with the City of Alexandria Pipes & Drums in Virginia. I also played tenor drum and bugle with this band. Having moved to Pennsylvania in 2015, I played with the Kiltie Band of York, a traditional Scottish regimental-style pipe band. Currently, I play with Ceol Neamh, a competition pipe band in Lancaster, PA. The name in Gaelic means "Heavenly Music."

I have played at numerous solo piping events over the years, including weddings, funerals, memorial services, birthdays and other special occasions. I specialize in both Scottish and Irish piping tunes. I am able to tailor my performance to the requirements of the event. I also play Smallpipes for indoor events. I specialize in wearing military-style dress, but can appear in formal black-tie, or daywear attire in kilt, civilian jacket and tie. I am very flexible, and clients are always impressed with my professionalism and presentation.

Gus went above and beyond what we expected. He did everything to make sure the bride and groom had a SPECIAL day from letting them pick his attire to searching a particular song they wanted and learning it. He could not have done more to add that unique twist to their day. I would HIGHLY recommend Gus. He even went out of his way to check out the church to make sure the pipes would not be too much for the small church. His piping added to the IRISH wedding and the couple as well as guests loved it. I would strongly recommend Gus and would have him play for us again in a second! THANK YOU GUS!

Gus Person’s Response:

The Groom's mother hired me to play at this traditional Irish wedding in Culpeper, VA. I attended the rehearsal and played extensively during the ceremony. I also played the Bridal Couple down the aisle and out of the church. A Yellow Jacket stung my lip while I played outside, but I recovered quickly and continued playing! I also played at the Reception at a local Hunt Club as guests were arriving. I was happy to stay for photos. All of the families were incredibly appreciative, and it was a pleasure to play for this happy event.

Gus Person did an absolutely outstanding job playing at our wedding ceremony. I cannot say enough good things about him as a professional and musician, and I give him my highest recommendation. Gus truly made our wedding ceremony and event to remember and took great care in making sure that he was prepared in every way. We are so glad that we hired Gus because he really cared about doing an excellent job and he was very flexible and accommodating. Gus was also very responsive and available by telephone and email leading up to the wedding, which made it a real pleasure to work with him on the selection of songs and practical details. We will certainly hire him again.

Gus Person’s Response:

Asha was great to work with in the planning for her wedding at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington, DC. We had a short introductory meeting in Alexandria, VA and my wife and I attended another planning meeting at the hotel before the wedding. The Groom's family came from Scotland for the wedding, and were resplendent in full Highland dress. I also played "The Brown Haired Maiden" during the Hand-Fastening portion of the ceremony. It was a pleasure to participate in this formal wedding.

We are pleased to give Gus Person the highest possible recommendation. His presence graced our daughter's wedding with a memorable piping performance that enthralled one and all! We cannot overstate Mr. Person's gentlemanly demeanor, professionalism, and outstanding musicianship! He was so kind and patient in our planning process. On the day, he appeared in a stunningly impressive regimental tartan, playing in beautiful celebration mode--including special requests--as the bride and groom stepped from the chapel. He then skillfully led a march of delighted guests down the street to the reception dinner. It was an extra touch of blessing on an altogether lovely day!

Gus Person’s Response:

Kathy Y. booked me to play at her daughter's wedding at the Mary Dixon Memorial Chapel in downtown Lititz, PA. As guests were exiting the church after the ceremony, I played a number of tunes on the village green which had special meaning for the family, such as "The Green Glens of Antrim" and "Leaving Liverpool." I then led the entire congregation the three blocks down East Main Street to the General Sutter Restaurant for the Reception. I wore full-dress in Mackenzie tartan. During the cocktail hour, I spoke with many of the guests who were very interested in the pipes, my attire and piping experiences.
