Usually on Fridays we do a wrap up of gorgeous or interesting weddings or wedding ideas from around the web. But this week, two stories really caught my eye, and my heart. In Connecticut, a couple without power after last week's storms went over to the local high school/warming station to warm up. Instead, they wound up having a surprise wedding! The high school cafeteria baked a wedding cake for them, and their local state representative (also a Justice of the Peace) performed the wedding.
In a similar story, a couple in Binghamton, NY whose house had been flooded by Tropical Storm Lee a few months ago had a surprise wedding at the Dunkin' Donuts where they met and got engaged. This is not the first time Dunkin' Donuts has been a wedding venue, and it's not even the most unusual wedding venue. The store gifted them with a Keurig Single Cup Coffee Brewer, and a year's supply of Dunkin' Donuts coffee to go with it, and of course made them a donut wedding cake.
I think the reason these two stories so captured my attention this week was that they came at the same time those of us who write about weddings were obsessing over Kim Kardashian's marriage failure. Whether Kim's wedding was a sham or not, whether she gave up too easily or not, it just doesn't matter. One thing that's crystal clear is that true love does not require a multi-million dollar price tag (or even a several thousand dollar one) to be celebrated. What it requires is two people in love, and a community that's willing to help them celebrate.
Have a great weekend and happy wedding planning.
