While the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death draws thousands of visitors to Graceland in honor of the iconic performer, others choose to celebrate his life on his January 8th birthday instead. Memphis native and GigMasters client Tiffani does just that by paying tribute to “The King” each year with an annual Elvis themed party. When we heard about her Elvis party, we were “all shook up” to learn more.
Tiffani started hosting her Elvis parties four years ago, and despite the fact that she no longer lives in Memphis, she still plans to keep this tradition alive. Tiffani told us that this fun theme party not only commemorates this legend, but it also offers a “signature” winter event that does not conflict with the holidays. “Everyone is bored in January and there is a whole month until Super Bowl Sunday! The Elvis theme draws a crowd,” Tiffani shared.
For Tiffani, planning this party means incorporating decorations, food, and entertainment that all tie into the Elvis theme. Her home was decorated with blowup guitars and microphones and the party featured a menu of pork chops, barbeque with Corky’s BBQ sauce (a Memphis favorite), homemade banana pudding, and of course Elvis’ favorite - fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
Blue Suede Shoes
This year she decided to take the party to a new level, inviting “the king” himself (well, actually GigMasters’ member Chad Champion Elvis Tribute Artist). This was the first time “Elvis” joined the party, and it added a new element to this celebration. Guests were greeted as they arrived, and everyone received a pair of Elvis sunglasses for the event. “The party was a big hit,” said performer Chad Champion, who performed for about an hour, getting the crowd going with lots of dancing and singing. During Champion’s rendition of “Viva Las Vegas” a big conga line broke out as all of the ladies strutted their stuff.
“Everybody had a great time – they were totally shocked by “Elvis” and loved it,” said hostess Tiffani. She was also impressed how “Elvis” stayed in character, “when talking about his iPod, he said his daughter Lisa Marie helped him with it and that he summers in Minneapolis (that is where Elvis is ALWAYS sited), etc.
One guest even called his sister in Canada who is a huge Elvis fan and he took her request! Yes, Elvis went international!!” Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, and Blue Suede Shoes were fan favorites at the party. One guest even wore her own blue suede shoes for the occasion.
Elvis threw scarves out to his female fans and everyone got a Polaroid picture taken with Elvis as their party souvenir. Tiffani has decided to make an Elvis appearance a permanent addition to her parties and is organizing next year’s event to be a costume party. Tiffani let us know she’s already hard at work for next year’s event, “I am already planning it, a whole year in advance.”
