1970s - 1990's Hip Hop, R&B and Rap - We are a band. That's about as simple as we could describe who we are and what we do. We bang around with our instruments (aka, our voices) with no sheet music and just make music that is edgy, raw, and uninhibited. Couple this with moments of harmonic bliss, PBC A Cappella is proud to be one of Virginia/Maryland/DC area's newest vocal bands with a heavy focus on 1970s - 1990's Hip Hop, R&B and Rap. We do other stuff as well, but that's our bread and butter.
Today's contemporary a cappella has become an international phenomenon. With NBC's "The Sing-Off" and the movie "Pitch Perfect" putting contemporary a cappella in the spot light, a new generation of singers and song writers have emerged and are pulling a cappella from relative obscurity into the mainstream. With groups like Pentatonix and Duwende leading a new age of a cappella, groups are forming all over the world and music is being spread to all four corners.
PBC A cappella was established in January of 2013 when founders Leslie and Z Kekuewa said, "why can't we do this?" Having no experience other than what they saw on television or at a couple of a cappella festivals, the duo decided to reach out on Craigslist and Facebook to assemble a group of adult voices to cover music that no one else was covering. After a very shaky start, PBC A cappella finally formed in July 2013 with six singers (ranging in ages from 24 to 50). Leveraging technology to enhance their sound, PBC A cappella takes the influences of groups like Blue Jupiter, Euphonism, Fork, Cartoon Johnny, Traces, Urban Method and Ball In The House to create an ear bending sound that is fused with bone rattling bass, urban rhythms and of course, fantastic harmonies and vocal blends.
The primary goal for PBC A cappella is to simply make joyous noise. Loud, obnoxious, beautiful noise. So how do we do it? With the help of not only an amazing arranger and vocal coach, but the love and support from the a cappella community as a whole, that's how. We wouldn't be able to move forward with the same conviction if it were not for the support of this community.
