Still Pickin' is a Country-western group that also includes some traditional bluegrass, old timey and gospel music. The musicians represent many years of musical performance.
The group performs at fairs, old home days, granges, festivals, private parties, and house concerts. Still Pickin' is a concert band, NOT a dance band. No drums and no pop-country; just the classic traditional music of the country music pioneers and masters. The band comes complete with sound systems for both indoors and outdoors. They are known for their nicely arranged and well rehearsed vocal harmonies.
Still Pickin' gets the crowd involved with sing-along's and even does some audience participation pranks that are fun. The group has strong appeal to those who like classic country. The musicians are currently members of the Connecticut Agricultural Fair Association, the Massachusetts Fair Association, the International Bluegrass Music Association, the Connecticut Songwriters Association, the RI Songwriters Association, and the RI Bluegrass Alliance.
Lead singer Bob Coxx will transport you back in time with his rendition of the songs of such classic artists as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Vern Gosden, George Jones, Porter Wagoner, Lefty Frizzel and others from the early years. One of the five sons of New England's prominate fiddler, Slim Coxx, Bob is widely acknowledged as one of the state's finest traditional country music singers. He was inducted into the Connecticut Country Music Association Hall of Fame in 2003.
Handsome Jim Sharpley, started his music career as the lead vocalist and manager for his own country swing band, The Sharpshooters. You may have even seen him over the years broadcasting news, traffic and weather on Channel 8 WNHC-TV. After a musical hiatus, Jim joined up with Still Pickin' in 2011. He sings lead vocals and harmony and is relied upon as the group instrumentalist, playing guitar, banjo, Dobro, steel guitar and harmonica. This multi-talented musician was inducted into the Connecticut Country Music Association Hall of Fame in 2007.
Bass player and senior member, Myrna Riquier, provides harmony vocals for the group. She hosts the Windham bluegrass jam and is the Workshop Stage Captain for the Podunk Bluegrass Festival. She publishes Upcoming Bluegrass Events and currently hosts the New England Bluegrass Showcase, an audio program aired twice-weekly on Charter TV. As a songwriter, she has served on the Songwriter's Committee of the IBMA and has received a songwriting award from the Billboard Magazine Songwriting Competition and three additional awards from the Song of the Year & Lyric Competition. Her award winning songs are included in the Still Pickin' repertoire.
The Still Pickin' members are steeped in the sounds of country-western and bluegrass music.
