My name is Kelvin Matthews and I have been playing the steel drum musical instrument, or pan, for over 20 years. I have played for a wide variety of musical events including outdoor music festivals, weddings, corporate events, performances for the school systems, and background music for restaurant dinner environments. While I have spent most of this time playing in the Tropical Island Steel Drum Players, I also perform solo. Not only do I play the steel drums but I also help with the building and manufacturing of the drums which has given me an intimate knowledge of how the drums make all of those amazing sounds, why the notes are laid out the way they are and the easiest patterns to play your favorite songs for people who are beginning. This is literally an instrument that can be learned by anyone from the youngest of players on up. When I am performing solo, I use background beats that are created by myself giving you a refreshing mix of the familiarity of recognizing your favorite songs in an island style that's new to you. This gives me a versatile mix of a live performance with DJing to fit any occasion. Since I make my own beats, I can perform the same song in a nice soft and relaxed background music settings or turn it up for non-stop dancing.
