Man of Steel Steel Drummer from Toronto, ON

STEEL DRUM MUSICIAN / SOLO PERFORMER Daryl Williams is a recognized steel pan musician in the Toronto area. He was born in Toronto Ont. from a musical family that immigrated from Antigua / Barbuda in the 1950's and has been involved with music since the 1960's. By the early '70's he became the head chorister at St.Thomas Anglican Church. During this period, he received professional training in voice, piano and the Church organ under the instructions of Dr. Walter McNutt. During his high school years, attending Jarvis Collegiate Institute, he achieved success as a senior member of the string orchestra where he played and studied the violin cello. He was also a tenor in the school choir. Daryl Williams received training in the fundamentals and rudiments of the single tenor pan under the instructions of members of the legendary Hell's Gate Steel Orchestra in Antigua / Barbuda. He was a student of the Treble Clef Music School and learned to play the Double Tenor (a rare set of steel drums and known for being very difficult to master). In 2005 he became an important member of the nationally popular Pan Fantasy Steel band which has consistently won 4 “Pan Alive” competitions in the last 4 years. Daryl soon joined the stage side later that year performing at weddings, and special functions. His solo career began at the Harlem Restaurant / Jazz Bar in Toronto, Ont. under the direction of Carolyn T. playing a “rusty old “ tenor pan and playing alongside with the house band, accompanying vocalists coming on/off stage. The gig was well received and the positive feedback he received from a relative of Jazz legend Duke Ellington present at the time encouraged him to move forward and continue his step as a solo artist..
