GILBERT and other 19th-century authors. These bring poems and prose by these writers to vivid life without costume, make-up, lights or scenery. Most 19th-century literature was written to be heard as well as read, and Stephen Mead's enthralling renditions of these pieces have gripped audiences in the UK, continental Europe and the US since 1987. All of these pieces can be performed literally anywhere there is a little space and a fairly quiet environment. They are suitable for theatres large or small, but no stage or special lighting is essential, so they are equally suitable for community centers, public halls of any kind or parties in private homes. Mead continues to present solo performances of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", presented the last four years at venues in the Washington DC area. A new addition to his performance repertory, "Alice in Wonderland", performed as a one man show in two parts of an hour each, "Alice's Adventures Underground" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass" was hailed as "masterful" by local critics at its debut in Alexandria. Stephen has worked for London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Arts Collection Fund, the National Trust (UK), Richmond Adult College, Missenden Abbey Buckinghamshire, among many other venues. Stephen had the honour of being invited to perform his one-man adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" at the Dickens Festival in Dickens' home town Rochester, Kent, in the historic Guildhall three years in a row. He also performed a tour of Switzerland under the auspices of the Anglo-Swiss society and appeared with singer Stacey Earle in a coast-to-coast tour of the USA. In the Washington DC area, Stephen Mead has presented solo performances at the Washington Arts Club,Happenings at the Harmon hosted by the Shakespeare Theatre, three times, and the Barracks Row Fall Festival on Capitol Hill, among many other venues. Program choices "Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" A CHRISTMAS CAROL: a tour de force as the immortal story of Scrooge is brought to life – laughter and tears and a host of sharply-etched characters. Performed from memory by Stephen Mead, with Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Marley's Ghost and all the other famous characters of the classic Christmas story brought to life before your eyes. "Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe" THE RAVEN – one of the most famous and haunting poems ever written, Length: about 12 minutes THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH – chilling and strangely beautiful parable of the plague. Length: about 18 minutes THE BELLS – famous and exciting poem. Length: about 7 minutes THE TELL-TALE HEART: an utterly gripping and incredibly powerful depiction of madness and murder. Length: about 18 minutes "Alice in Wonderland" Vividly acted out from memory, no special stage or lights required, Stephen Mead's adaptations of "ALICE's ADVENTURES UNDERGROUND" and "ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS" will amaze and delight audiences of all ages as they see more than forty separate characters come to life before their eyes. Hilarious and enchanting, "ALICE"S ADVENTURES UNDERGROUND" and "ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS" are each approximately an hour long and are very suitable to being performed either separately or in one program with an intermission. Stephen Mead plays the narrator, Alice, and an unforgettable assortment of endearing and wacky characters including the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty and Tweedledum and Tweedledee to provide a unique and unforgettable entertainment, including the poems "The Walrus and the Carpenter" and "Jabberwocky."
