My name is Ernie Averett and I have spent a large portion of my adult life working to preserve farm and forestland. I was born and raised on our ancestral farm, "The Flatwoods," which has been owned and operated by our family since 1823. My earliest memories are being on the farm with my grandfather, father and brother participating in whatever work was going on around us.

Throughout my youth, a love of the land was instilled in me and continues to this day; now more than ever. Even while at college, I returned home to work on weekends and throughout the summers. I was constantly drawn to the soil, fields, forests and the lifestyle offered therein.

Following graduate school I assumed full responsibility for our farm and its operation. During this time, I became interested in land preservation in a more formal and structural manner. By 1999, I was convinced there was sufficient interest to support a regional land trust; hence Tar River Land Conservancy was born. To date, TRLC has preserved more than 19,000 acres spanning 151 properties of magnificent forest and farmland across eight counties in north central North Carolina.

For most of these years I have served as board chairman and head cheerleader. At every opportunity I have spoken before any group possible as an advocate for land preservation. This compelling story has paid off in many ways: thousands of acres preserved, hundreds of members and an ever-growing endowment which creates organizational stability.

As a professional speaker I bring all this knowledge and experience to bear in my presentation for you. During these trying economic times it is essential that your speaker make the strongest case possible regarding the critical need for land preservation. Your members and supporters MUST be convinced of the validity and importance of this great work and how vital their financial support remains in this effort. I can do these things for you with the same compelling speech that has worked in many venues for many years.

Smattered with good humor, your audience will be informed, inspired and entertained. Your organization will be the ultimate beneficiaries of my presentation. By booking my speech, you will get the best and reap the best rewards.
