Our core jazz group features acclaimed Detroit area bassist, Don Mayberry. In addition to jazz standards, we play jazz versions of pop and rock tunes. Like the R & B group, we don't try to sound like anyone other than ourselves but put our jazz spin on all kinds of things, like Beatles, Earth Wind and Fire and Gordon Lightfoot. We add a drummer, female vocalist and/or sax and/or trumpet to this ensemble, as customers require.
We offer high quality live jazz and rhythm and blues music for special events in combos ranging from: Jazz Duo (Piano & Bass) to full R&B Show Band (11 pieces including bass, drums, guitar, three lead vocalists, three horns and percussion) and everything in between.
SEE MOTOWN BEAT FOR GREAT RHYTHM AND BLUES: MOTOWN BEAT represents Louis Johnson (piano, sax, flute & vocals) and a consortium of Detroit Area professional musicians and vocalists, who have worked with Louis for many years. Our core 4 piece R & B group, covers a wide range of material including jazz and blues, pop and rock. Louis is joined by bassman Motown Larry Walton, Carl Graves on drums and Sandy Love on Guitar, vocals and trumpet. Because Louis and Sandy both sing and double on horns, the quartet is extremely versatile, while being compact and affordable. For larger events and budgets, the group gets supplemented with up to 7 additional vocalists and musicians. We also offer a funky trio on which Louis plays electric piano with a mix of some vocals and flute and sax, sprinkled in, together with bass and drums. We are not a cover band in the sense that we don't try to imitate original artists, but rather put our unique treatment on whatever we do and we feature an extensive repertoire, take requests and will tailor set lists to the needs of particular clients.
Our fees range from $300 to $3,000, depending on personnel, hours, and equipment required for the event (we charge a modest premium for early set up and for travel of more than 100 miles from Detroit).
