Quite often I get asked how I got into music, and as frequent as that question is it always for a moment takes me to a place where I am contemplating the way it happened and the "why". Growing up I was a sports kid and I still love being very active physically. I don't come from a musical family, or never even showed any serious musical interest as a child; but one day at the age of 15 I happened to walk by my mother who was watching TV and I saw a saxophonist on a spotlight and everything else was dark on that stage. I knew at that moment with absolute certainty that somehow I was going to be playing that instrument for the rest of my life, as if it was written somewhere. I just felt a very strong conviction about that and I said to my mother.. "Madre, I am going to play that instrument in the future" and she smiled. I forgot all about that event and six months later I got an offer to join a band and to start learning. I could not afford an instrument and was loaned one. A year later I was playing in church and with local bands. Ever since I picked up the instrument I knew I couldn't live without it. I have been blessed with the opportunity to perform in intimate settings, as well as stadiums with thousands of people across the world. It gives me the most humble of feelings to hear from people of how what I played has touched them and connected with them. I don't play music because I love being a musician or anything close to that. I don't ever feel like picking up a saxophone just to play, and honestly that has been an issue many times even to practice. Whenever I pick up my instrument there has to be a sense of purpose to accompany it. When I perform I feel the necessity to connect with the listener's emotions, and it is in that connection that I feel my purpose for playing begins.

My name is Anra. I play saxophone.
