Sidecar Social Club is a 5-piece jazz ensemble based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Our group has an extensive amount of experience playing, learning and teaching music. And we have traveled far for the opportunity to exhibit what we do and the sounds we make. Each five members share a lifelong enthusiasm for songwriting, collaboration and performance. Our music is bold and fun and the chemistry between us is palpable. We have a thrill and verve for music that we hope is inspiring and contagious. And we absolutely aim for each of our concerts to be a joyful revelry.
A Sidecar Social Club show is spirited, stylish and engaging. A versatile and ever-expanding song catalog of speak-easy jazz, vintage R&B, real country and modern pop keeps our sets colorful and surprising. And keeps the dancers hopping.
Our weekly shows are commonly standing-room-only. And we frequently play two to three nights a week. These steady performances keep us sharp and have focused the band's artful interpretations of tunes from the Great American Songbook as well as sparked a growing number of originals and re-imagined modern fare by artists such as Cake, Danny Elfman, and Queens of the Stoneage.
In late 2011, artist and chanteuse, Lisa Veronica Wood, approached keyboardist J. Clarence Crew, Jr. with the idea of starting a jazz group. While already maintaining a busy schedule composing for film and TV, Crew made time to rehearse and with the arrival of bassist/recordist Aaron Bittikofer they began to shape the heart of the band's sound. The trio quickly found that they shared a common love for the stories and themes of Prohibition and the broken and unrequited women of song. Now, the fire was stoked. And with it came the auspicious additions of saxophonist F.O. Finch, III and drummer Edward Theolandos Butler to complete the balance.
Crew had spent the previous twenty five years performing salsa, funk, and avant-garde in concerts and at jazz festivals and with a number of different organizations. While Bittikofer was touring with the highly-regarded alternative band Hipbone.
Lisa Veronica Wood's professional career began in Key West, Fl, where she sang with small groups and nightclub combos. Lisa fearlessly engages her audience, drawing them in from the very first note. Before landing in Raleigh she was writing and performing with various bands in Toronto, Cleveland and Los Angeles.
Finch, who is brimming with funk, jazz, and big band credentials, delivers an invigorating shot of New Orleans and blues-inspired brilliance to the music. And the man pulsing with the rhythms of his own eclectic musical odyssey of thirty-plus years, including adventures in free jazz, world music, theater and Americana, is Butler. He is the master of a fat groove and layers it with a well-honed palette of percussive textures. He keeps happy feet tapping and happy people dancing.
