The Philip Booth Jazz Band plays an appealing mix of jazz-rooted instrumental music. Depending on the event, we focus on swing, bebop, electric jazz, soul jazz, cool jazz, fusion, jazz on the bluesy or funky side, and instrumental covers of rock and pop tunes. We play energetic, up-tempo music as well as quiet ballads.
Philip, who plays bass guitar, upright bass, and other instruments, is a longtime musician and Florida native who has led or co-led numerous Tampa Bay area groups, including current groups Acme Jazz Garage, the Philip Booth Jazz Quartet, Swan City Jazz Project, Blue Guava Orchestra, and Trio Vibe, and previous groups Greenwich Blue, Bop City, and Ghetto Love Sugar. Acme Jazz Garage in 2016 released a CD that was played on more than 30 jazz radio stations across the US, and received positive reviews in national magazines and regional publications.
Philip's bands have played for enthusiastic crowds at festivals, nightclubs, private parties and special events, including: Clearwater Jazz Holiday, Gasparilla Music Festival, WMNF Tropical Heatwave, Child of the Sun Jazz Festival, Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, The Palladium, Jannus Landing, Skipper's Smokehouse, Safety Harbor Wine Festival, Ella's, The Independent, The Ale & the Witch, Tampa Museum of Art, St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market, Moscato's, Yeoman's Road, WMNF Jazz Festival, USF Jazz Festival, Ybor City Jazz Festival, Frankie's Patio, Cafe Ovo, King Corona Cigars, Peterson's, and many other venues and occasions.
Our standard lineup is guitar, keys, bass and drums, but we frequently work with horn players (trumpet, sax, trombone), as well as vibraphonists, percussionists and other musicians as needed. We are primarily an instrumental group, although we can provide a singer if/when requested.
We can bring a group as small as a duo or as large as 7 to 10 pieces.
We're easy to "audition" -- come see Acme Jazz Garage play every Thursday and Friday at Timpano in Hyde Park Village (Tampa).
