Catherine Whitney is an American Jazz Singer and Lyricist. She is Chicago-based yet her band leading engagements find her singing with top flight jazz stars in NYC, LA, CA, TX, FL, MI, Argentina, France, England, etc. She is not only a fine vocalist and entertainer, but an excellent composer and lyricist as well. She sings in the vo-cool style similar to that of Anita O'Day and Peggy Lee. She is published by Second Floor Music in New York. She was a lyricist for the late Freddie Hubbard, jazz trumpet legend for his Hubtones Publishing catalog. She learned about music and jazz as a child, since her mother, Dottie Bee, made a living as a vocalist/bandleader herself with a jazz trio known around the Chicago area in the 1950s and 1960s as The Dottie Bee Three. Her stepfather was the late George E. Lescher, a pianist who played with the Spike Jones Band during World War II and was a longtime Chicago South Side resident. In later years, her stepfather led the George Lescher Ballroom Orchestra, a 10-piece band that performed at numerous sites around the Chicago area. He died in March 1986 at the age of 64 near Houston, Texas, while on tour with the Jan Garber Band. Dottie and George were lifetime members of the Chicago Federation of Musicians. Catherine began her professional jazz singing career under the mentoring of Chicago tenor saxophonist Von Freeman and Gene Ammons guitarist George Freeman in the early 1990s. Jerry Brown, Nneenna Freeelon and Gloria Cooper have recorded her work and three songs (in collaborations with Curtis Fuller, Rodgers Grant, and Milton Sealey) are in print through Hal Leonard's books "Sing Jazz" and "Jazz Phrasing" publications. Additional co-writing with other jazz artists as a composer/lyricist (aside from Von Freeman and Freddie Hubbard) have been with Sergio Mihanovich, Johnny Griffin, Houston Person, Clifford Jordan, Stanley Turrentine, John Coltrane, JR Montrose, Ray Brown, and Pete Cosey. She is also a Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) affiliated writer. Besides her work in the capacity of a jazz music collaborator nationally, Catherine has performed with many great Chicago and world class jazz legends including Von Freeman, John Young, Jodie Christian, John Bany, Freddie Hubbard, Johhny Griffin, Javon Jackson, Ronnie Mathews, John Hicks, Louis Hayes, Curtis Fuller, Bennie Golson, Sergio Mihanovich, Richie Cole, Eric Alexander, Paul Serrano, Robert Shy, Rusty Jones, Joe Vito, Johnny Frigo, Eric Schneider, Mark Madsen, Ken Chaney, Baabe Irving III, and Johnnie Faren as well as many others. She steadily appears at various jazz clubs and venues around the Chicago area with her duo, trio, quartet, quintet and big bands. She performs regularly for the Chicago Bulls Games pre game entertainment shows. A regular act through the years at the Ambassador East's Pump Room, Yvette's, the Gold Star Sardine Bar, the Moosehead, Andy's Jazz Club, Toulouse, Carmines, Saxon Hotel, Palmer House, Underground Wonderbar, Fairmont Metropole Lounge, Artie G's, the Renaissance Hotel, the Chicago Hilton Towers, Mia Cucinas, D'Amatos, the Flame in Countryside, the Mill Rose Inn, the Mill Race, the Hyde Park Holiday Inn, Pops for Champagne in Chicago and Highwood, the Velvet Lounge, Jilly's in Lake Geneva, Alexanders, Louie's Chop House, Vesuvios, Milt Treniers Supper Club, Shays, Emilianos Tapas, Villa Verona, D'Agastinos, Shaws Crab House, and countless weddings and corporate events at country clubs and yacht clubs and marinas throughout Lake Geneva Wisconsin, Illinois, Inverness, Wilmette, Winnetka, and Michigan jazz pavilions in 6 cities for summer jazz festivals.
