I was hit head on by a repeat drunk driver who was 3 times the legal limit. To say that I am alive to speak about this is a miracle and to say that I am walking with only the assistance of a cane is an even bigger miracle. The ironic part of all this is that I was providing a saferide home for a group of gentleman that were being responsible. I dropped off 2 of them and was heading back to get the rest of the group;when I was hit head on by a drunk driver traveling between 60-80 mph and my speed was 40 mph making it a 100-120 mph collision. It took the fire department with the Jaws of Life an hour and 45 minutes to get me out of the wreck. When they slide me into that ambulance they thought I was a dead man. I was airlifted to a hospital that specialized in trauma that was about 100 miles away. In my presentation, I don't point fingers at anyone; we all drink from time to time. I focus on my story and other options besides getting behind the wheel drunk. I have a great PowerPoint with pics of the vehicles, my injuries, xrays and CT images. I also have hardware that was in my body including a rod that went from my knee to my ankle and screws and clips that were in my hip before it collapsed and needed a complete hip replacement. I also documented all of my 8 surgeries to this point with more possible to come. Prior to the accident, I had 3 part-time jobs and I attended college full-time. I was working toward being a automotive tech. I was a high school baseball umpire and basketball ref, drove taxi and limo, and was an ambassador at my college doing tours to prospective students. I know can't do any of them. I currently work with a group called Northwoods Restorative Justice as a member of their Victim Impact Panel. I tell my story to first and second time OWI offenders. Trying to reach them before they do to someone what happened to me or worse. I have a philosophy that if I reach even one person in my audiences, then I have done my job and I may keep at least one more family from enduring what mine had to and still endures to this day.
