Robert Boyd, 'Berto' is Santa Barbara's own premiere Flamenco guitarist/composer. He is one of the rare and few Americans who has dedicated his musical dreams and professional career to the art of Flamenco and is recognized as one of the top composers of Flamenco music in the United States. Born into a family of artists, which includes famed lead singer Brandon Boyd of the multi-platinum band Incubus, Robert began his musical training at age five and has been studying guitar for over 20 years. A rigorous musician and careful researcher, he has studied in Spain with some of the world's finest virtuosos such as: Gerardo Nuñez, José Luis Rodriguez (former musical director for the Ballet of Cristina Hoyos), Guillermo Rios (former guitarist for the infamous Flamenco company of Jose Greco), and Jesus Montoya. In the United States, Robert has attended and participated in master classes with Pepe Romero, Manuel Barrueco, Paco Jarana (musical director for Eva La Yerbabuena), Gaspar Rodriguez (musical director for the National Ballet of Spain), and Rafael Montilla (guitarist with the company of Paco Peña). He has also studied Music Theory and Analysis with Dr. Burns Taft, Composition with Miguel de Aguila and Robert Lawson, Classical guitar with Matthew Grief (Los Angeles Guitar Quartet), Brazilian Jazz with Chris Judge (Gille Apap & the Transylvanian Mountain Boys), Jazz guitar with John Payne, Classical Guitar with Dmitri Diatchenko, James Edwards, and Carlos Gonzales.

Professional Experience

Robert has appeared in numerous concert venues throughout the U.S. as a soloist and accompanist. He is the founder/musical director of "Arte y Pasion Flamenco Music and Dance Company", "Ritmo Gitano", and "BertoFlamenco Music and Dance Ensemble" each consisting of a 4-10 piece ensemble. In 2006, he was invited to share the stage and musical direction for the production "Calle Flamenca" with Spanish maestro Jose Luis Rodriguez and Bailes Ferrer in the annual festival "Flamenco in the Sun" in Miami. In October of 2006, he was the musical director/guitarist for Carmen de Torres direct from Sevilla in a concert at UCSB and at the S.B. Festival of Art. Also in 2006, he premiered the productions "Flamenco en Concierto", and Tarde Flamenca" at both the Unitarian Society in Santa Barbara and the infamous "Fountain Theater" in Hollywood. In 2004, he premiered the two productions "Alma Flamenca" and "Berto y Flamenco Vivo" at the Center Stage Theater and the Unitarian Society. In 2003, he was invited as the featured soloist of the 7th annual "World Guitar Concert Series" in Mendocino, Ca. Robert has appeared in recital at Ventura College, and for the Classical Guitar Societies of Ventura and Santa Barbara. He has appeared annually at Santa Barbara's "Old Spanish Days Fiesta" since 2000 performing at both the Santa Barbara Mission and Courthouse with several Flamenco dance companies such as Linda Vega's "Danza de España", "Fuego Gitano", "Pacific Action Dance Theatre", and "Familia Zermeño". In 2004 he accompanied Flamenco dancer Marcellina del Luna in her last performance of the "Painting comes to Life" at the S.B. "Sunken Gardens Fiesta Finale". He was commissioned again in 2005 by dancers/choreographers Timo Nuñez and Pamela Lourant for the "Fiesta Finale" which included an incredible cast of musicians including two Guitars, Cello, Violin, Flute, Percussion, Cante Flamenco, and Palmas. His performances have received rave reviews.

Robert's renowned ability for creating an unequaled ambience for private parties and house concerts has made him a sought out performer throughout California and the United States. Robert has entertained many celebrities such as Peter Gallagher, Diane Lane, Hillary Swank, Katie Holmes, Dennis Miller, Barbara Streisand, Ted Danson, Josh Brolin, Alanis Morrisette, Tim Allen, Brooke Shields, Matt Leblanc, George Thorogood, Troy Aikman, Fairuza Balk, Kate Beckingsdale, Alecia Moore aka "Pink", and Trip Taylor to name a few.

In 2004 Robert started his music brokering business Boyd Music Services (BMS) which employs over 30 of the finest musicians in the United States. BMS has contracted musicians for large corporations like MGM Las Vegas, World Savings, AOL, and Deckers Outdoor. BMS designs and provides music and entertainment for many of California's finest weddings, private parties, corporate events, and unique special occasions of all sizes, themes, and budgets. We specialize in Spanish guitarists, Flamenco Music and Dance, Brazilian, Classical, Jazz, Gypsy Jazz, as well R&B, Blues, and even D.J.'s. Many of our artists are concert level musicians, recording artists, and event professionals with vast experience.
