Big Sam's Funky Nation is rooted in New Orleans and puts the FUN in funk and the PARTY in any event. Hailed as the best at such major festivals as Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, SXSW, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Essence Music Festival, the Voodoo Music Experience, and countless others, Big Sam's Funky Nation is not afraid to turn it loose and let the good tunes flow. While primarily a touring band playing major music festivals and venues across the country and the world, BSFN is available for weddings, campus events, corporate functions, and virtually any kind of party imaginable.
Big Sam Williams is hugely charismatic and connects the show with crowds looking to be involved, dance, and have some fun. BSFN's ability to successfully engage a crowd is instrumental to turning an ordinary event into something extraordinary and memorable. Their original music, spiked with pop and classic hits, appeals to a wide ranging audience.
Big Sam's Funky Nation has provided the entertainment for numerous private events including weddings of all sizes, campus functions, film/television premieres, and corporate conventions including Sony, Nike, Honeywell, Maxim Magazine and PGA to name a few. Also, the band was featured on Regis & Kelly, the Travel Channel's "America the Wright Way" and the New Orleans episode of VH-1's "Soul Cities." Big Sam's Funky Nation knows how to make people move and is astute at reading an audience and providing the right musical spark needed to get the party going, and make for an evening of non-stop hip shaking, finger popping action.
Big Sam's Funky Nation is a driving force of urban funk. Ryan White, of the Oregonian, says the band is “tight enough (and hot enough) to turn coal into a diamond!” The band is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” Big Sam's Funky Nation is not a one man show; the members of the Funky Nation, a group of well trained and experienced musicians with impressive credentials of their own, meet the challenges of their funky band leader. Between the band's solos and Big Sam’s trombone riffs and second-lining (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) this band knows how to get a crowd going.
Big Sam's Funky Nation currently has three albums to their credit: Take Me Back, Birth of A Nation, and Peace, Love & Understanding. Their latest CD, Peace, Love & Understanding, showcases the evolution and depth of the band. Peace, Love & Understanding dredges up the massive funk grooves that have become the trademark of BSFN. "One thing that is immediately noticeable after just one listen is this CD is all about a party. Big Sam's live performances have become legendary funk fests with a deep NOLA groove, and BSFN delivers a studio rendition just as inspirational" - Monsters & Critics.
Since 2001, BSFN has been searing its distinctly funky mark onto the New Orleans music scene. The band has toured across the country and internationally, spreading its high energy musical manifesto - and always bringing the party along the way. From the Big Easy to the Big Apple, San Francisco to Miami, UK, Paris (and countless points in between) BSFN has ignited the crowd with music and moves that make it too hot to sit still. As Jambase Online proclaims, "As long as groups like Big Sam's Funky Nation helm communal happenings like this one, the funky fever is bound to spread."
