Dr. Chris Johnson is a nationally recognized expert on the prescription opioid and heroin epidemic and has been doing public speaking for over 5 years. His speaking style is entertaining and engages the audience so that everyone can understand the subject matter whether they have a science background or not. Previous audiences have included hospital staffs, legal task forces, corporate executives and managers, FDA advisory committees, and local communities. His public health advocacy has made him a frequent consultant to political leaders and local media. His understanding of public health issues has made him an effective communicator regarding America's gun violence epidemic as well.

The United States is in the grip of an unprecedented public health crisis that has been declared a national emergency by the President of the United States - the opioid and heroin epidemic. Currently, this epidemic is claiming over 30,000 American lives per year and is causing the overall life expectancy of Americans to decline, even as citizens in other countries are living longer. What is all the more tragic about this epidemic is this - it was completely avoidable and man made. The opioid crisis was not an accident or the result of good intentions gone awry. It was the result of deliberate action by the health care industry that has abdicated its scientific due diligence and ethics in the name of increased revenue. This course explains how and why this epidemic happened and what we can do to end it. It will offer practical advice to individuals on how best to protect themselves as patients in the immediate future and how they can work to change a health care system that has failed them in the long term.

Dr. Johnson's work in public health advocacy has led him to research and speak about America's gun violence epidemic. Far from being unrelated to opioids, the social dynamics that make a population vulnerable to intoxicating substances also makes a population more vulnerable to violence. Chemical dependency and violence often go 'hand in hand' as different faces of 'diseases of despair.' Dr. Johnson explores the dynamics that makes the United States unique in the developed world for its high levels of violence and propensity for drug use. He helps the audience understand these lessons so that we can all work for a healthier and safer society.

Dr. Johnson specializes in corporate functions, fundraisers, community events, school assemblies and speaking conventions.

"Dr. Johnson is a thoughtful and compelling advocate for opioid reform. I have heard him speak on this and related topics many times, and his deep knowledge of the subject and his insightful recommendations for how we, as a society, can address the opioid crisis are always well received. I co-hosted two large opioid conferences in Minnesota and made certain that he was a featured presenter at each."
- Andy M. Luger, Former US Attorney, District of Minnesota

"Your talk was original, thoughtful and fearless. The thoughts are based on experience, knowledge and reflection. This was a practice changing talk."
- Dr. Bhavjot Kaur, Internal Medicine, Fairview Clinic system
