We love to surprise audiences and make them dance with great songs they may have forgotten about... cuts that many other bands wouldn't even think to perform.
With a repertoire that spans nearly every genre, from funk to jazz to Latin, rock and soul, with a catalog including Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, the Jackson 5, John Meyer, the Rolling Stones, and Aretha Franklin; UGC can win over even the most skeptical listeners.
We are professional, thoughtful musicians who truly enjoy helping to make your event a success.
A little Upside history:
Friends and former band mates Steve Tych (bass) and Brian Bruendl (drums) got together in 2001 and talked about what their ideal musical project would be. Originally, the Coalition was not to have a static lineup; that members, and more importantly musical ideas could flow through the group freely. After putting together an initial group of musicians, UGC recorded a demo, and played several dozen shows. The lineup was shuffled again, and in 2004, and the band recorded the full-length original CD Funky Estofado. After producing a video with award-winning director Jason Williams, Upside hit the road. After many shows touring, and playing some high profile shows- opening for acts like Tito Jackson, the Greyhounds, and Grammy winners Ozomatli, UGC shuffled the deck again in 2006.
Now staying closer to home, The current group is concentrating on performing the works of other great artists of the distant, and not-so-distant past. Steve still handles the bass guitar duties, with Cheri Modrow and guitarist Sean Berry sharing lead vocals. Troy Leisemann is on saxophone, and JD Schield keeps it all together on drums. Like before, each member brings their own talents, influences and personality to the Coalition.
Upside plays festivals and venues around their home base in Milwaukee, such as Summerfest, State Fair and the Rave, though they've traveled as far west as Washington State for the Bite of Seattle festival. They continue to give back to the community every year (over 10!), by producing their own Food For Families benefit show, with all proceeds going directly to Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee.
