STEP 9 started as a gathering of musicians who used to play professionally earlier in their lives. They debuted in the Central Wisconsin music scene to great reviews and ever-bigger gigs. Their blend of styles (alternative, rock), instrumentation (including keytar, synthesizers, and harmonicas) and original music from the pens of Joe Adamek and Jim Roots has made them a crowd pleaser at every show. STEP 9 is:
JOE ADAMEK (vocals, guitars, songwriting) has been driven to write and play songs ever since his parents bought an out-of-tune upright piano when he was four. After playing piano, drums, xylophone, baritone, rhythm guitar and bass guitar for numerous rock and school bands, he's grinding out lead guitar riffs with Step 9. His influences include U2, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Cure, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam, and Rush.
JIM ROOTS (vocals, harmonica, keyboards, songwriting) has been playing all his life. He's played professionally with blues and rock bands as a vocalist, pianist, and harmonica player since his teenage years. Now he's back at it with Step 9. Jim's influences include the Black Crowes, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, The Doors, Dire Straights, and Porcupine Tree. Oh, and Katy Perry (when his wife isn't nearby).
JULIE 'JOOLZ' KACZMAREK (percussion) has been playing drums for more than 30 years and has been in many bands throughout the Milwaukee area including Lash, Nuna, Skexies, Scarlett and The Barrettes. She also did the drum and bugle corps thing where she learned how to never drop a drumstick! She dislikes mean people, snow and being late. Her influences include Buddy Rich, Alex Van Halen, Karen Carpenter, and Sheila E. Joolz plays dw drums and Paiste cymbals exclusively.
JOHN KULAS (bass guitar, backing vocals) is influenced by anything that gets him whistling, humming, tapping, singing, or (God forbid) dancing. He picked up a guitar at age 13 for $25 and played for The Illusion and Shovelhead back in the day. Most recently he played bass for the On Tap Band before his grade school and high school pal Joe called him to take the next “step”. His other pals include John, Paul, George (ok, maybe a little Ringo), Jimi, Stevie, Eddie, Geddy, Neil and Alex
JON WOLF (rhythm guitar, backing vocals) has been shredding and harmonizing since he was given a 1978 Hohner at age 10. Jon, a chronic string breaker, joined Step 9 as part of his recovery program. In exchange, he lets the older folks in the band live his younger life vicariously. His influences include The Beatles, Matchbox 20, John Mayer, Goo Goo Dolls, and or cource, Tenacious D.
