Setting Suns is a New York Tri-State area four piece band that provides a unique blend of music along the roots spectrum, incorporating an array of styles from outlaw country, bluesy-rock, country rock, alt-country to old-timey, reggae and regular old classic rock. Our set has been very much informed by the late Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble. Levon was the master behind the drum kit for The Band. In later life Levon hosted jams in his barn in Woodstock, NY. He would invite legendary musicians to accompany him onstage. We've tried to recreate this same type of experience in our shows. Our set is warm, familiar, always friendly, always fun. Artists we cover include: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Little Feat, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, JJ Cale, Kris Kristofferson, Wilco, David Allan Coe, Waylon, Tom Petty, Steve Earle and many more. Typically we play 3 hour sets with breaks happening either once at 90 minutes or in smaller breaks every hour. But we've got enough for 4-4 1/2 hours. To make this sound come to life we have acoustic and electric guitar, copious amounts of slide, mandolin, banjo, percussions and recently added bass. For those looking for a more rustic sound for an event of any sort please consider Setting Suns. We absolutely love to play music, love to play together and we would love to entertain you at your next event.
While we have a carefully cultivated set that we use as a framework we are happy to customize a set for your event. Billy & Mike recently performed as duo for a wedding reception in New Jersey. The client had a preference for a full country set. As such we worked up an almost entirely new repertoire to accommodate the client's wishes. A listing of the songs we added are included in our sample set in this profile. The client also requested songs by Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen & Rascal Flatts which we gladly added in keeping with our client's wishes.
We will travel to points in New York and the outlying areas of New Jersey, Connecticut, Long Island and Pennsylvania
Additionally and most recently we were retained to play a single song for a gentleman from Minnesota who planned an elaborate series of events culminating in a proposal of marriage in New York. The entire sequence of events was rooted in the song "Ho-Hey" from the Lumineers. The song called for a trip to Chinatown. To help the process along I scouted out the ideal location deep in the heart of Chinatown. I also arranged for a photographer to capture the big moment. So in addition to the more typical restaurant/bar gig we are also available for these types of special events. We were proud to be part of a uniquely "New York" moment. All the folks at the intersection of Bayard & Elizabeth Sts. stopped dead in their tracks and reached for their iPhones. Some photos of the moment have been added. For all guys and gals out there preparing to pop the question to their significant others give us a call. We'd love to be a part of the big moment and add that extra touch.
