AVERAGE JOE has finished in the Top 5 in the BEST LOCAL BAND category multiple times in the FOX-8 Akron-Canton Hot List, competing against over 160 entries in the category. AVERAGE JOE has developed a signature PARTY ROCK style, sound, and attitude. Not content to simply do replicated versions of songs, what sets AVERAGE JOE apart from other bands is their ability to create new, high-energy, guitar-driven arrangements of songs that audiences know and love, but are used to hearing in a different way. AVERAGE JOE has taken keyboard-based 80's classics such as I Ran (So Far Away), Little Red Corvette, and Melt With You, and transformed them with crunching guitar, driving drums and bass, and killer vocals that turn them into rock-n-roll songs with an attitude and ferocity barely hinted at in the original versions…all while still maintaining the party feel and dance-ability of the songs. Another crowd favorite at an AVERAGE JOE show is their rendition of Sweet Caroline, a rocking, party punk version that never fails to energize the crowd. If you can't imagine Sweet Caroline as a punk rock song, then you have obviously never been to an AVERAGE JOE show.
On the other hand, some songs are done as true-to-the-original cover versions. When AVERAGE JOE does a straight cover of a song, they take great pride in recreating the sound and feel of the original version. Key to this is the vocal talents of lead singer Joe Smith. Joe has the ability to add subtle inflections to his voice to accurately mimic the original singer. Close your eyes, and you'll think you are listening to Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day, Jon Bon Jovi, or Michael Stipe from R.E.M. Guitarist Matt Cline, bassist Dick Bechler, and drummer Jay Boughner work together to create the perfect accompaniment to Joe's vocals. All four members are long-time musicians, each with over 20 years of playing experience. This experience shows in both their on-stage presence, and their off-stage professionalism.
Another ingredient in the AVERAGE JOE recipe is keeping the songs fresh. Even the best bands can get comfortable with their set list, which leads to audiences hearing the same songs time after time…which leads to audiences eventually not coming back. AVERAGE JOE is proud of their ability to keep their list of songs ever evolving and growing. The band has been together in the current lineup since 2009, and has yet to play the same set list at two different shows. While there are absolutely crowd favorites like Sweet Caroline that are played at almost every show, the band also gives the audience a taste of something new at each and every show. Not only does this keep the show fresh for AVERAGE JOE'S ever-growing fan base, it also gives the band a great arsenal to draw from when requests come in from the crowd.
Bottom line, if you're looking for a fun, high-energy band that will have the crowd dancing and singing along to songs spanning the last three decades, then AVERAGE JOE is the band for you.
