George Jones and George Strait are two of the all-time greatest names in country music. Today, another young man who carries that name also hopes to carry on their legacy. With a mix of mature talent and musical skills, good looks and shy charm, and a passion for American Country music, the stage is set to welcome the next George - George Navarro.
George Navarro is a young artist (he was born in Chihuahua, Mexico in 1991), but at just 23 years old, he already has a decades-long heritage of music and performing. His father, Jorge Navarro, along with one of his uncles, are members of the Latin Grammy-winning band, Caballo Dorado – which translates to “Golden Horse.” The band has been touring since the 1980s, and they dominated the Mexican charts in 1997 with “No Rompas Mi Corazon,” the Spanish rendition of Billy Ray Cyrus' country hit, “Achy Breaky Heart.” The band remains popular, winning their last Latin Grammy in 2009. Jorge's mother (George's grandmother) was a prominent mariachi singer in Chihuahua, while George's own mother, a painter, stirred his creative mind.
George first picked up a toy guitar at two years of age – and never really put it down, graduating to playing bass guitar, Spanish guitar, drums and some keyboard while growing up. While his dad would give him suggestions on his style, to this day, George has never had a professional music lesson, which underscores the tremendous raw talent he has been gifted with. While still in high school, he also began song writing. All the while, although he was living in Mexico, he was absorbing American music, mixing dominant country stars like George Strait and Alan Jackson with classic rock groups such as AC/DC and Led Zeppelin.
In 2013, a stroke sidelined his dad, who asked George to fill in for him while he was recovering. So for the next year and a half, George toured throughout Mexico and in the United States with Caballo Dorado, sometimes playing to auditoriums filled with as many as 25,000 fans. Today, thankfully, Jorge has returned to health and to his band – giving young George the opportunity to begin pursuing his own solo career in the United States.
The U.S. country music scene is exactly where George wants to be, and where he belongs. It cannot be a coincidence that in reaching out to possible talent scouts and managers in the U.S. the one that George Navarro connected with is the son of an industry booking agent who used to book “King George” Strait in the 1980s. Like many passionate artists before him, George left everything behind in Chihuahua to meet his new rep in Oklahoma and begin working the club and concert circuit.
During his performances, concert-goers can hear Heavenly Grace, ( ), a polished up-tempo number that you would expect to hear on any major market country music station. This song, along with three others that he co-wrote (The Hottest Stranger, 'Til The Sun Goes Down and Late at Night), make up some of George's first solo recordings, released in 2012. Since then, the pace has been hectic. He shot his first music video, he continues to develop his art by many recent co-writes to find the right sound and songs, and he has toured extensively in Texas and Oklahoma, including opening for country stars Joe Nichols and Aaron Lewis.
Soft-spoken in person, George transforms on stage to a consummate performer – and that is where he says he feels most at home. In fact, if you ask George what he likes to do in his “spare time,” he frankly answers that he doesn't have any hobbies outside of music at this time. Working out keeps him in shape for high-energy shows, and any hours that are not devoted to practicing, performing or traveling can be used for song writing, which he continues to pursue.
Of course, the country music mecca of Nashville is the ultimate destination for any artist who wants to earn a place in this genre. During George's first visit to Nashville in the fall of 2014, his showcase performances were warmly received and highly praised by some of country music's most powerful executives. Additional affirmation comes in the form of George's recent signing with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), one of the world's premier talent representative agencies.
So while George Navarro has big shoes to fill if he wants to live up to the legends of George Jones and George Strait – all signs say he is headed in the right direction. He hopes you will join him on this amazing musical journey.
