THE STRING QUINTET
For the last 7 years, the Paradise String Quintet has spearheaded the development of the string quintet.
Though that may seem like it is simply a matter of adding the double bass to the cello part, it reflects our ideal to provide the full violin family of instruments, though it has meant re-developing most of our sheet music.
It might also seem like, if we have a quintet, therefore we should be able to perform as a quartet. Well, we can, but we don't have the desire to abandon the great sound and projection we achieve with the full violin family of instruments. Therefore we do NOT offer a string quartet - but we offer our powerful String Trio! - another ensemble type creation.
If you desire in your event a sound that's familiar to the modern ear, in general, we'll need the double bass.
Having the double bass as an integral, independent part of the music, has the additional benefit that the cello is free from the traditional bass line harmonic foundation, and can therefore soar with melodies in the low registers of the human hearing range. And, if you've heard modern music from afar, you already know the carrying power of the bass notes (sometimes that's all one can hear, from afar).
Our Music Director: Juan DeVilbiss is a Phd. with a specialty in acoustics, and his arrangements for string quintet offer the full sound of the complete violin family of instruments, in a balanced way - ideal for social events of weddings. A double bass (the instrument used in jazz ensembles without a bow) can easily overpower the upper strings, so it takes a master of the instrument to play it, and to use the bow to advantage.
Though we enjoy listening to the traditional string QUARTET for hours, we believe that the great composers in history would have composed for the (2 vlns, 1 viola, 1 cello, one dbass) string quintet if the double bass strings and design had achieved the perfection it has today. Dvorak was one great composer who wrote for this medium. Example:
Of course, concert pieces are not always appropriate for outdoor performances, or social events where the most important aspect is that the guest be able to CONVERSE and network together. For this important ambiance the silky, transparent, unobtrusive sound of a string quartet or QUINTET is best. For these qualities, the string quartet (and even more the string QUINTET) is associated in movies with sophistication. We play acoustically, without mics, but with great power and projection.
Our repertoire consists of time-tested selections from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic eras and also from movie themes of the great movies of our time (where great music is being composed today).
One more thing: Our Hawaiian music arrangements are truly Hawaiian in style. There's some wonderful music originated in Hawaii that is hardly ever heard by tourists.
Juan DeVilbiss and chamber orchestra composed and recorded the orchestral sound score for the film "Paniolo `O Hawaii" produced by Edgy Lee. Juan has coordinated ensembles for over 600 functions on Oahu, and some on neighbor islands.
