Baritone Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews' professional career spans more than twenty years and many regions of the country including major theatrical performances with Hope Repertory Theatre (Michigan), Lyric Stage (Texas), Theatre 3 (Texas), Dallas Opera (Texas), Chautauqua Festival Theatre (New York) and John Houseman's the Acting Company (New York). Gaitley also founded Deep Ellum Opera Theatre in Dallas, Texas in 1991. He received the Leon Rabin Award (Dallas' version of the Tony Awards) for Best Actor in a Musical for his performances in the musicals "Sweet Charity" and "My Fair Lady." Equally at home performing folk music, classical works, sacred music or the best of Broadway, Gaitley's personality and clear baritone always shines through. His rich baritone voice and ease on stage has earned him high praise from critics and audiences. In reviewing Cather County Perry Stewart with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram states, "The best voices in director Drew Scott Harris' uniformly fine cast belong to Diane Guthrie, as the lonely opera singer, and to Gaitley Mathews as the moonshiner Allen Poole. If this production were distilled into one zenith of a musical moment, it would be when Mathews sings Out Here in the Woods." In another production, Mark Lowry, also with the Star-Telegram states, "No matter where he is onstage, he's the dominant presence," and, Chris Shull with The Met Newspaper highlights Gaitley acting prowess in a production of Sweet Charity when he states, "Gaitley Mathews is Charity's nemesis throughout the evening, playing with equal sagacity both the movie star Vittorio Vidal and the neurotic Oscar Lindquist. As the former, he interrupts the show's second well-know tune, Charity's soft-shoe 'If My Friends Could See Me Now,' with charming sophistication and, most importantly, a consistent Italian accent." In addition to his stage work, Gaitley is often called on as a soloist for concerts, musical reviews, weddings and other events. He combines his vocal talent with pianist Jim Stevenson-Mathews as the Scottish Music duo Two Men In Skirts (See Two Men In Skirts listing under "bands"). The duo began their celebrated collaboration in the winter of 2006 after being invited to perform for several musical projects for Scottish games and Celtic events in the Northeast. With humor, joy, and unique style they lead audiences through the rich tapestry of Scotland's musical past and through some of the more contemporary works by Scotland's greatest composers and lyricists. With Gaitley's mellifluous baritone and Jim's eloquent piano playing, audiences are always in for a special musical experience. These "Two Men In Skirts" always tell their audiences about the "Great Kilt," and then with humor and plenty of Scottish wit and charm, drive home the point ---- "It's fine for someone of Scottish heritage to poke fun at himself, but don't YOU dare call what I'm wearing a skirt!" In November of 2009 the duo released their debut CD, Two Men In Skirts - The Music of Scotland. Gaitley is a member of Actors' Equity Association (AEA), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA). He holds an Associates of Arts degree in Business from Louisburg College (NC), a Bachelor's of Arts degree in English Literature from Berea College (KY) and a Master's of Fine Arts degree in Acting from Southern Methodist University (TX).
