The Petersen family with their four children moved to Branson in the summer of 2007 when Jon (the dad) retired after 23 years of service in the United States Air Force. Please see our pictures and music on our web page which is searchable as "Petersen Family Band". Affectionately known as "Air Force brats", their four children were born on Air Force bases and became accustomed to moving every 2 to 3 years with various assignments. The family opted for home schooling which provided continuity in their education and encouraged strong spiritual values. Their music began simply as a fun way to spend time together and evolved into The Petersen Family Band along the great traditions of bluegrass music. They have performed many engagements at bluegrass festivals, Silver Dollar City, churches, theaters, benefits and competitions entertaining thousands in the South and Midwest. They enjoy blending their voices and instruments to honor God and are deeply grateful for the unity it brings to their family as a whole.
The signature sound of the band is the vocal harmonies of sisters Katie (22) and Ellen (21) along with their brother Matthew (18). Karen (39 again) provides background vocals and plays mandolin while dad Jon alternates bass and guitar. Katie leads the band musically and plays a very lively fiddle while Ellen drives the band with her one-of-a-kind Hot Pink Hopkins Banjo. Matthew plays a great lead guitar and enjoys being creative (i.e. clowning around) while playing the upright bass. The sweetheart of the family, young Julianne (11), captures the hearts of audiences with her solo vocals and twin fiddle tunes with her older sister and clogging.
The family has a weekly show in Branson, MO at the IMAX Little Opry Theatre on Shepherd of the Hills Parkway every Saturday evening from 5PM until 6:30 PM. They especially enjoy playing for churches and at special events and they convey a strong message of family unity and Christian values.
They won first place the national United States Air Force talent show, the Sight and Sound Gospel Sing-Off and placed second in the Silver Dollar City Youth and Bluegrass Competition two years in a row.
