Performers in the Atlanta bluegrass scene for the past 30+ years. These award winning musicians have performed all over Georgia at Wedding Celebrations, Corporate Parties, Festivals ,Private Backyard Events, University Parties, and Bluegrass Festivals. We specialize in 2,3 and 4 part vocal harmonies and solid instrumentals. Members of 8th of January include contest winners for guitar, banjo and mandolin. Our repertoire includes, Traditional, Original and some Progressive bluegrass music selections From the following artists, Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Old Crowe Medicine Show, Alison Krause, Seldom Scene, Bob Dylan, Zak Brown, John Prine, Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead and several other surprises along the way. It is our goal that selecting 8th of January will make your event something that will be "Memorable" for you and your guests. And YES we do take special requests and can perform weddings ceremonies and cocktail hour. We can also tailor your needs by offering sound reinforcement and lighting if needed at no additional charge.
Bob Knysz - Mandolin
Bob's music roots began in Chicago, where he started playing music at the age of 10. Blues, Folk and Rock guitar were his early influences then in 1978 he discovered the mandolin with Bill Monroe, Doyle Lawson and Jethro Burns as his early mandolin influences. He began playing mandolin professionally in 1979 in Chicago and became a member of the Atlanta music scene in 1982. His love affair with the mandolin has brought him through many musical idioms including: blues, bluegrass, country, acoustic, classical, choro, and jazz. Bob has played with the Greater Atlanta Bluegrass Band, Bluegrass in the Backwoods, Bluegrass Five, Good Medicine, Hot Club of Atlanta, and the Handsaw Brothers. Bob is also the founder and concertmaster of the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra and Mandolin Consort of Atlanta. Bob now resides in Jasper, GA
Bob Putnam - Guitar
Robert “Bob” Putnam is a native Georgian who grew up in Clayton County. As a child he would listen to his father play the harmonica on the porch of their home. A nurturing mother purchased a Silvertone acoustic guitar which Bob started to play at 12 years old. Through the years his dominate influences in music were John Prine, Bob Dylan, Tony Rice, the Dillards, and Mountain Heart. Bob has performed at countless events through the years at bluegrass festivals, social events, churches, and charity fundraisers. He currently lives in Cherokee County and has performed with the “Faculty Grass” bluegrass band for the past 27 years and the “Jot em' Down Boys” for the past six years. Bob's professional career included teaching the Visual Arts in public schools for the last 30 years.
Ed Davis - Bass - Banjo
A native of Alberta, VA, Ed has enjoyed bluegrass music as long as he can remember. Although classically trained as a music educator at East Carolina University and Georgia State University, his main musical interest has been bluegrass for almost 40 years. After moving to the Atlanta area in the mid '70s, he played bass and banjo with Chattahoochee Station. Since that time he has performed with Pony Express, Bluegrass in the Backwoods and Faculty Grass. Having eclectic musical tastes, he has played cello in the Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra, electric bass in the Steve Shivers Trio and Community Bible Church Chapel Orchestra, and mandola in the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra and Mandolin Consort of Atlanta. Ed spent 37 years as a music educator in Georgia public and private schools.
Danny Bermel - Fiddle - Vocals
We think Danny is one of the hottest up and coming great fiddlers from Georgia. Danny is a music educator and is currently attending the University of Georgia where he is working on his Doctorate in Music. Danny is one of the upcoming composers of fiddle tunes in Georgia. He has also performed with Ed and Bob in “Faculty Grass” band and with Bob Putnam in the Jot'em Down Boys and is always in great demand in the North Georgia area.
