The Ray Birely Big Band, under the direction of Rocky Birely, consists of 14 to 17 instrumentalists(4 to 5 saxophones, 3 to 4 trumpets, 3 to 4 trombones, piano, upright bass, guitar, and drums) and featured vocalists, Connie Guy and Harry Haines. Members come from a variety of backgrounds, including but not limited to degreed instrumental music instructors, retired and active US Army Jazz Ambassadors and US Navy Commodores, and several name band musicians. We have performed for numerous galas, weddings, social clubs, country clubs,alumni organizations,municipalities,and are available for corporate parties/events.
This is the Big Band sound featuring a large repertoire of standards great for listening and dancing. We specialize in music from the 30's and 40's and have some selections available from later years. Primary focus is big band swing, fox trots, ballads, waltzes, polkas, and various latin styles.
Careful attention is given to playing correct tempos for dancing. Ballroom dancers love the flow of the music which is generally 2 swing tunes, a ballad, 2 swing tunes, a ballad, followed by 2 or 3 specialty dances in a row (ie: waltz/latin or waltz/latin/ polka.
If you desire soft music for cocktails or dinner prior to or during the early part of your event, our pianist is available as well as our rhythm section.
Tuxedoes are worn by all band members for formal occasions(weather permitting).
We also offer The Ray Birely Combo, a 9 piece band with music from the 30's thru the 80's, an excellent choice for wedding receptions and parties where the age of your guests ranges from younger to older.
