For the past 19 years The Boulder Big Band has been regularly entertaining audiences at festivals, concerts, banquets, weddings, parties, Oktoberfest celebrations, and community & corporate events across Colorado's Front Range. We are an authentic 20+ piece jazz orchestra with a very diverse portfolio, but specializing in the great Swing-Era sounds of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich and other jazz royalty.
Founded in 1997 by local Boulder trumpet legend John Hoffman, the band is composed of talented and inspired musicians, most of whom have established their careers outside of the music industry and just play for the love of jazz. Our dedication to a quality sound and the fact that we aren't looking to feed our families off of your gig money make us an elegant - and surprisingly affordable - entertainment option.
And Big Band Swing is back in-style! Nothing matches the energy of live breath through live horns. This is the real deal, not a small combo trying to play swing time. We play the original arrangements with full instrumentation. Just imagine ... 6 saxes, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums and vibes, plus one of the finest jazz singers in the state, Deborah Stafford. We make a big, exciting sound ... indoors or out!
Please note that apart from the gigs where we're playing our German polkas (details on that below), we are an "all or nothing" package in terms of our instrumentation. We won't break down our band into a smaller group because all of our music is scored for a full jazz orchestra. The exception to this, when given enough notice, is that we can provide small combo-type services as an adjunct to a performance by the full band. For example, during a wedding the combo can play the ceremony & cocktail hour, and the full band would play the dance. So, if you'd like to hire us for your event, plan on around 20 great musicians showing-up to deliver a world-class performance!
To complement our traditional jazz library, we also have a large and ever-expanding set of jazzy holiday tunes for your year-end party, as well as an entire book of authentic German polkas that we regularly perform during Oktoberfest parties and upon request. For the polka gigs we'll break the band down into what we call the "Little Big Band", comprised of between 5 - 11 players depending on the venue. But we are always delighted to accommodate all of your special song requests, so long as we have enough notice to purchase the charts and rehearse the music. We also provide a PA system and are happy to play any pre-recorded music of your choosing when the band is on break.
The Boulder Big Band stays in constant communication with our clients prior to a gig to make sure we are creating a set list that will deliver a professional quality sound at an amateur rate. Fees include all of our transportation, travel, and setup time.
Please contact us if you have any questions, or if you would like a suggested set list for your event. We also invite you to come meet the band and hear us play at any of our regular rehearsals, Tuesday evenings in Lafayette. Contact us for the exact time and location.
Thank you for considering The Boulder Big Band for your very special occasion, and we look forward to entertaining you!
