Mardi Gras is February 17th this year, and just because you won’t be able to make it down to NoLa doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate your pants off in the comfort of your own city! Here is the GigMasters guide to throwing your own over-the-top Mardi Gras party to celebrate this joyous holiday. Beads are optional (but encouraged)!

1. Hire a Zydeco band!

Zydeco is a genre of music native to the New Orleans area. It stems from Creole culture and is a mix between blues, r&b, and the native music of the area. Zydeco bands typically consist of an accordion, a fiddle, someone with a vest froittor (it’s a percussion instrument worn over the chest like a vest), and a washboard, along with the standard guitar, bass, and drum kit of a regular rock band. The style is unique and infectious – just try not to dance when the music plays.

Zydeco bands are available all over this great country, not just in NoLa! Take a look at our Zydeco Band listings to hire one near you to play at your Marti Gras fiesta.

2. Decorate with Purple, Gold, and Green

Traditionally, Mardi Gras colors are purple, green, and yellow, a funky combination that looks great together when decorating. But these colors weren’t chosen at random! Rex, the king of Carnival, declared these the official colors of the holiday in 1892. Purple stands for justice, green is for faith, and gold represents power.  Download a free printable Mardi Gras sign and get inspiration for decorating your Fat Tuesday party!

3. Get Festive with Face Paint

Fat Tuesday is all about excess – so your style needs to be over the top too! Hire a face painter from GigMasters to get everyone at your Mardi Gras party to look the part! Face Painters can decorate your crowd in a variety of designs, including the iconic Fleur de Lis.

4. Hire High-Flying Entertainment

Hire entertainers who make a BIG impact. Stilt walkers, fire dancers, or magicians can make your party a celebration of excess in true New Orleans style.
