What happens when four regular guys with day jobs meet up and agree to sift through the noise and try to create high quality original songs in the footsteps of their musical heroes? One answer to that question is The Marshtones.
The idea began when guitarist and songwriter Jim Dewar of Holliston MA, started a search for kindred spirits in a similar stage of life who wanted to go off the beaten path and form a band that alot of "settled" musicians with full lives might not gravitate towards: not a pick-up band, not a garage band: a band aiming to create fun accessible rockin' songs inspired by, but not derivative of, their idols: Creedence, the Beatles (of course), Midnight Oil and Hank Williams, to name a few.
It was a challenge: But many Craigslist ads and hours of auditions later, the pieces of the Marshtones mix finally fell into place: Linc Merrihew, a veteran drummer of the LA & Boston rock scenes, hopped on board with his hybrid mix of pounding backbeat and swinging finesse. Sean Haggerty joined, an Australian native whose grooving & melodic bass completed the rock/swing rhythm section. Then came guitarist and songwriter Jim DeTore nicknamed "2Cap" to differentiate him from the other "Jim D". A honky tonk/swing guitar player who prefers "taste" and "restraint" to "flash", 2Cap did a stint in the alt-country music scene in Boston in the late 80's. And so the journey began.
What makes Marshtone music interesting is that despite the diverse backgrounds and influences of its members, the sound coalesces nicely into a unique, smoky mix of rock/country songs channeled through semi-hollow guitars and pounding beats that connect instantly: the songs stay with you as you find yourself humming them hours later, always a tell-tale sign of either good writing or a really effective advertising campaign!
One quote from an experienced musician who attended a recent gig puts it most succinctly. "They have a sound all their own and it's as catchy as a cold!" Check them out.
