Sergei Bassehes was born in China of Russian parents. At 14, he emigrated to South America and for four years resided in Santiago, Chile. His involvement with music began there as a bass player in several bands featuring ethnic Russian, Gypsy and South American styles of music. His involvement with the classical guitar started in San
Francisco upon hearing a concert by Andrés Segovia.
He taught himself to read music and then went to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he introduced himself to the Chair of Classical Guitar who took him on as a student. He later moved to New York, where he became a protégé of Vladimir Bodri, a close friend and promoter of Andrés Segovia.
For the past decade, he has been living, performing and teaching on the Mendocino coast.
