About
FrankenPhil is an acoustic duo with literally decades of combined experience. Phil Newland on guitar and lead vocals played his first gig at the ripe old age of sixteen at a high school dance. From then on he has payed his dues as frontman in multiple bands always able to fall back on his solo abilities when during the lean times. As the years past he discovered that he enjoyed the challenge of the playing alone but was unable to use his soloing abilities and began to seek out bassists to accompany him. The second voice was also a wonderful addition to his rich vocal tones. Playing along the coast in south eastern Connecticut and into Rhode Island
He would cross paths with Frank Wilson a remarkable bass player with an outstanding talent for harmony.
Frank, although the younger of the two, had his own history of both east and west coast experience. Having grown up playing in the Providence area he had spent some time rocking in San Francisco. Ironically Franks duo instrumentation was the same as Phil's so at a time when boths partners were seeking hiatus it was
A perfect fit for the two to team up. Seamless!
Having spoken on the phone and at several gigs where their acts had shared the stage there came a time when Phil was booked at a side venue during the inaugural Mystic Blues Festival and Frank was in need of a front man for an event that same evening, It made perfect sense for Frank to sit in on Phil's set to get a feel for it and later the two would meet up to fulfill Franks obligation. the first set went so well a listener made the comment "wow you guys are good! How long have you been playing together?" the answer was literally "about an hour."
The two never broke stride continuing to book events as they came . In fact they were so busy it was months before they could get even their first rehearsal in, learning the tunes on the job.
One night Phil was into his cover of the classic Mark Cohn tune "Walking in Memphis" and out of nowhere was a cutting harmony! Without effort or rehearsal Frank was killing it! They soon discovered that not only they both musically capable, able to solo as well as nail down the rhythm, but their voices match very well. At times they witnessed harmonic coupling a blend often found in sibling singers.
The tag they give their sound is "an acoustic mixed bag". Similar to a Clapton unplugged sort of thing their list ranges from Clapton, and Dylan, to James Taylor, Stevie Ray, The Band, Paul Simon, Gordon Light foot, Little Feat and many more. If you like these genres you will not be disappointed when you hire FrankenPhil1
