DESCRIPTION:
"This gang is my favorite so far. The place was packed. Twenties and thirties hot jazz filled the air. Mel Kubik sang like an angel. Gavin Bondy played trumpet and led an eight-piece band through tight arrangements of Ellington, Armstrong and the like. You wished it would last forever. You did not want to leave, but we kicked you out. Now you can come back and do it all over again." - Tony, of Tony Starlight's Supperclub & Lounge.Choose the Shanghai Woolies for a beautiful mix of early hokum, jazz, pop, blues, and rockin' big band. It is a lot of fun, appeals to your guests of every generation, and can be alternately subdued or high energy. The eight-piece band got together in 2001 under the direction of Pink Martini's trumpet man Gavin Bondy. Since then, the Shanghai Woolies have played to enthusiastic crowds throughout Oregon, opened for the 5th Dimension, Arturo Sandoval, Pink Martini, and recently released their debut CD, Jungle Nights, to rave reviews. "... a new twist on the raucous, slippery, foot-happy jazz you'd expect to hear at the legendary Cotton Club ... hard to resist.
- The Oregonian. "...jazz the way it once was played in the early years: hard and hot,... They evoke an era gone by... current and credible... They play with skill and panache..."
-Two Louies Magazine. And this, from a happy bride: Hey there! You played at our wedding on June 28th and we absolutely loved you! I swear I heard as many compliments on you guys as I did on what a beautiful bride I was! Really, you made our wedding a truly extraordinary event. It was the party of the year (at least for our families and friends). Thank you so much! Warm Regards,
Danielle H.
