Testimony of T.J. Hutto: I grew up in a family surrounded by preachers and singing evangelists. As a boy, I was in church every time the doors were open. I grew up knowing all of the bible stories and could quote to a person on how they can be saved. I lived a life of family reputation and thought that I was safe from hell because of it. It wasn’t until many years later, that I realized the severity of my sins; I realized I was a fake, and that I could never do anything good enough to get into heaven on my own. This is the story of my life changing experience.

In 1994, I met the most beautiful God-fearing woman in the universe. We became best friends, fell in love, and were married in the summer of 1995. Before we knew it, 2 years had gone by and we were preparing for our first child. Now, it’s important to remember that my wife was a child of God and I was not. I thought that I had everything figured out.

In 1997, my wife and I brought into this world a beautiful baby girl. I was on the top of the world. Everything was going as plan. Or so I thought. A few months after her birth, my wife and I noticed that her development was not as it should be and that she was beginning to have multiple seizures a day. We took her to the doctor and they began to run test after agonizing test. It wasn’t a long period of time, but it seemed like an eternity before her diagnoses was given. Then, before we were really ready, the answer came. “It appears that by our test results, your little girl has cerebral palsy,” the doctor said. At that moment, an overwhelming surge of fear, anger, and contempt poured into my heart. My whole world came crashing down in that moment.

It didn’t take long for the bitterness and anger to erode my heart. A few months later my bitterness turned to hate and my anger turned into contempt against the very God I had learned about my whole life. In December of 1997, I recall telling God that He knew nothing of what I was going through. I said, “There is no way, that you know what I feel like. You have no idea what it is like to hold your child and watch her suffer through seizure after seizure and not be able to do anything about it!” I was helpless. I felt like giving up. Thoughts of ending my own life actually ran through my mind. But little did I know, God was getting ready to give me His answer to every charge I accused Him of.

Around the beginning of 1998, on a cold Sunday Morning, I decided that I would make my wife happy and go to church with her and our daughter. I thought that if I did this, it might ease some of the tension around the house. Honestly, I didn’t really want to go. But I did. I remember walking into the church that morning, and for some reason, it felt different. I can tell you exactly where I sat in the sanctuary. Now, let me point this out, I don’t remember the song that was played and I certainly couldn’t tell you what the sermon was about, but I can tell you this. I remember these words from the pastor, “if you are 99.9% sure that you are saved, you could be 100% lost…” As soon and as quickly as he said these words, my entire life flashed before my eyes. The Holy Spirit began to convict me of everything in my life. I realized right then and there, that I had never had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I realized that if I died, I would spend an eternity in a real and literal place called hell, forever. Before I knew it, I was face down at the altar repenting of my sins, begging for forgiveness, and asking Jesus Christ to be Savior and Lord of my life. I committed my life to Him and Him alone.

Since that day, I can honestly say that God has given me a peace that passes all understanding. He has given me a joy that makes my heart content, and a love that has no boundaries. Yes, there are times when trials come my way, and yes, there are times when I sometimes feel overwhelmed. But when these times come, I know that I can trust, depend and rely on the only One who knows all things. Psalm 34:1 says, “I will bless the Lord at all times, His praises shall continually be on my lips.” I will praise Jesus Christ for all things forever and ever.
