Description
Paul Krawl, born in Hollywood, California on November 9, 1951 was the youngest of two children. His family moved to Santa Cruz, California when he was 12 years old. At home, his two brother's would play recordings by B.B. King, Duane Eddy, Butterfield Blues Band, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and countless other performers of the era. "One day my cousin handed me a guitar he had just found at a hawk shop… an old 1956 Fender Stratocaster... I gave him my savings of $150 for it (and still have it)… I went down to that same pawn shop the following Monday with money borrowed from my Mom and bought a Fender Deluxe Reverb to complete my playing ensemble.
"When I was 16 we moved to Bakersfield, California… culture shock!. But, to pass the time, I'd met up with my cousin, a guitarist, and his friends to trade licks and see what the rest of the world was playing. By 18 I gained enough experience as musician to be comfortable up on the stage in front of a crowded house. My first real gigs were fronting Wayne Martin Brown and the Impacts in the Pismo Beach area… he gave me the name "Hollywood Slim"… I had a professional name, so that was my ticket to book engagements all up and down the west coast with our band that we appropriately named "the Hollywood Heaters", with Arnie Story on Bass, Duece Johnson on drums, and Dennis Payne sharing the front vocals and guitar playing. Along about 21, I went into the Air Force, forcing a short hiatis from the music scene. After tech school, I formed a band to play at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. We played mostly weekends there and Laramie. After a four year stint in the Air Force I went to College back in California in 1970… and played music to support a family I had brought back from Cheyenne. I reformed the Hollywood Heaters with me on guitar and vocals, Leroy Hammond on keyboards, Barry Hill on harmonica, Roger Hodges on drums, and Peter Casey on bass".
"I've been influenced by B.B King, Guitar Watson, Etta James, the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Zepplin, and scores of progressive musicians… and especially the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Stylistically, I'm a blend of all these musical greats, and anybody that influenced the changes happening through the 60's and 70's."
Early on, In the 80's, Paul quickly became an 'in-demand' entertainer with his newly formed band "Paul Krawl n' the KingSnakes", booking out of San Francisco. His vocal and guitar work was a major reason for the KingSnakes winning the Crysalis Records Music Award in 1980, 1981 and again in 1984. Paul is a featured artist at the annual "Knoxville Blues Extravaganza", and at the "Under-The-Bridge Concert" outside of Maryville, Tennessee. He has also performed at the Chicago Blues Festival, Blues Inc., and Kingston Mines with Luther Allison, and as a featured artist with the Alley Cats. Paul's discography includes recording sessions with the Heaters, KingSnakes, Strutter, Lady Blue, and Stone Faces.
Presently, Paul is performing in the Midwest with "the KingSnakes", "Stone Faces", and "the Slims", an acoustic trio. Expanding his considerable talent to include piano and composition, Paul is currently in the studio recording his current CD, "Woman Troubles". Although a Rolling Stones tribute band, the Stone Faces music is reminiscent of early Rolling Stones material.
Paul Krawl with the KingSnakes is available for gigs, corporate events, wedding parties, concerts, recording sessions and more.
