Hayes is a Vietnam era Veteran of the United States Navy serving as a Engineman on the USS Hampshire County LST 819, the USS Thomason LSD 28, and the USS Shreveport LPD 12 from September 1968 through August 1975. A father of seven and married to Maribeth B Catalla of the Philippines.
