DESCRIPTION:
New Orleans sousaphonist Monty Montgomery's DC Jazz band-nominated for Best Jazz band in DC ( Wammie Awards). We play jazz from the 20s through the 50s with a New Orleans flavor we add to that Carribean Creole music from the same era to provide a Latin tinge. The group can be booked as a trio for formal events needing background jazz or as a big band for dancing, No amplification needed and we are more than just mobile- we can recreate the traditional New Orleans secondline complete with Grand Marshall, BuckJumpers and traditionally attired band. A great addition to events in larger venues or events where moving crowds from one location to another is needed.
Past engagements include the Kennedy Center, Congressional Hunger Center, The Presidents Correspondence Dinner, Share Our Strength Gala at Acadiana Resturaunt,Ronald Reagan Center, and more- references upon request.. We also do senior centers, Schools, and Clubs- this band plays to suit the occassion and is equally comfortable on center stage or as a tasteful addition to conversation.
Monty Montgomery cofounded the New Orleans Group Panorama Jazz band and was (joint) recipeint of three Offbeat Awards for Best Folk Ethnic Album (93, 94) as well as Creole Music award (95)from The Allainze Francais. In addition to his main projects in New Orleans he worked as side musician with most of the main names of New Orleans Jazz at one time or another in the town often referred to as "one big band" one gets plenty of chances to participate- and thats the feel that we bring to our gigs. Our Creole set is music drawn from Martinque, Jamaica and Latin America- particularly music influenced by New Orleans Jazz of the 20s and 30s.
Yamomanem is New Orleans slang for " your mother and them " in other words family and close friends. It's is usually the second question you ask after you say hello - hows yamomanem?? Come to the ever popular Wonderland Ballroom in Colombia Heights the first Weds of every month to find out- shows start at 9pm.
